TAMPING-BAR.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. MooRE, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of VVheeling, county of Ohio, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tamping-Bars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tamping bars, and more particularly to an instrument of that class employed in driving the tamping upon the charge in a blast-hole.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a simple and ineXpensive connecting means for the rod and tamping head of a tamping bar.
A further object is to provide connecting or uniting means for the rod and tamping head which will indicate to an observer the depth to which the rod is seated within the head.
As is well known, a tamping head of copper or other non-spark emitting or producing material must be employed in driving the ctamping upon an explosive charge in order to effectually guard against a premature explosion of the charge; and, since copper is relatively more expensive than iron or steel, 'it is the usual practice to cast a copper head upon the end 'of a steel rod or handle member. To comply with the requirement of the law in some States, the steel rod must terminate within a specified distance of the tamping-end of the tamping head.
For the purpose of facilitating inspection of the instrument and to clearly' indicate the depth to which the rod penetrates the tamping head, a terminal for said rod is provided in the present invention whose lateral edges are eXposed to View throughout its length.
The nvention consists in, the particular construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this.

throughout the several views-1 indicates the rod or handle member of the device, the same being formed of any preferred material, such as iron or steel, and 2 designates the cylindrical copper tamping head. The rod l has a reduced portion or neck 3 at one end, and'this neck is terminated by an integral fiat blade t of substantially rectangular'form which is preferably of even width throughout and slightly tapered, as shown. The width of the blade equals the diameter of the body portion of the cylindrical head 2 so that, when the head is formed thereabout, the lateral edges of the blade are exposed ,to view, as is clearly shown in Figs. l and 2. Said blade has therein one or more orifices or apertures 5 adapted to be filled by the metal of the head when cast thereon, a complete tie or bond being thus afl'orded whereby the rod and head are rigidly connected. The neck 3 is wholly inclosed by the copper head, as shown, the rear portion of said head being taperecl rearwardly to the junction of the rod-body with said neck. The side of the tamping-head 2 is provided with the usual longitudinal groove 6 which admits of the operation of the tamping bar over the pointer which is employed to maintain an open pas-' age'to the charge for the insertion of the use.
