Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 24, 1909. Serial No. 509,320.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Piggott, in the county of Clay and State of I Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Bale-Tie, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bale ties and its object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and can be readily applied.
Another object is to provide a buckle for use in connection with the tie said buckle being so constructed as to positlvely prevent the tie from slippin after it has once been adjusted about a be e.
A further object is to provide a buckle formed in a single piece and which occupies the minimum amount of space.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts here inafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :-Figure l is a perspective view of a tie and buckle embodying the present improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the buckle and showing the ends of the the seated therein.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a wire-like tie provided at desired intervals with projections 2 in the form of elongated knobs. The buckle consists of a metal strip 3 slightly bowed and having its terminals extended along diverging lines as indicated at 4, there being a central opening 5 within the buckle and of sufficient size to receive one of the knobs 2, this openin being located at the center of a longitudlnal slot 6. Said slot extends into the terminal portions 4 of the strip 3 and is slightly greater in width than the diameter of the tie wire 1.
It is to be understood that the tie is provided throughout its length with projections such as described.
In using the tie the same is placed about the bale as ordinarily, and one of the terminals thereof is inserted into the opening 5 until one of the knobs 2 has been brought into position above thestrip 3. The tie is then drawn longitudinally so as to bring it into one of the ends of the slot 6 and with the knob or. projection 2 bearing upon the strip The tie is then drawn tightly about the bale in any preferred manner and the other terminal thereof inserted through the opening 5 so as to bring a knob into position above the slot 6. .When the tie is released this knob will assume a position upon the ad oining end of the slot, as indicated in Flgs. l and 2, and the separation of the en s of the tie is thus positively prevented.
It Will be seen that the buckle can be readily stamped from a single piece of metal and constitutes efficient means for securely holding the ends of the tie together. By providing the projections 2 at desired intervals along the tie wire, one of them is always in position to engage the buckle after the tie has been placed about the bale.
It is to be understood that the ends of the buckle are to bear against the tie and said buckle therefore extends over the ends of the tie and prevents them from coming into contact with persons handling the bale.
Obviously various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of the invention.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a tie-wire having solid elon ated projections thereon, of a buckle including a bowed strip having a longitudinal slot, said slot being intersected at an intermediate point by an opening for the reception of the projections, the width of the slot being less than the diameter of the projections. j
2. The combination with a tie. having solid knob-like projections thereon, of a buckle including a strip having a longitudinal slot for the reception of the tie, there being an opening intersecting the slot at an intermediate point for the reception of the projections, either end of the slot constituting a seat for the tie.
3.
