JAMES G. CLARK, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
VENTILATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1910.
Application filed June 5, 1909. Serial No. 500,260.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES G. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to ventilators and more particularly to those adapted for use in the construction of cellars or the like, and has for an object to provide a ventilator which may be embedded in the walls of the cellar and which will be provided with means establishing communication between the cellar and the outside atmosphere.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a ventilator having at one end telescopic means adapting the use of the ventilator in connection with walls of different thicknesses.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better set forth, and it will be understood that changes within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views Figure l is a sectional perspective view through a portion of a building showing the application of my improved ventilator. Fig. 2 is a detail front elevation of the lower end of the ventilator. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the ventilator. Fig. at is a detail front elevation of the upper end of the ventilator. Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is shown a portion of a build ing A which in this instance is provided with a cellar B. The walls of the structure in the present instance are formed from plastic material and have embedded therein at suitable intervals vertically disposed metallic tubes 1 provided at their lower ends with right angularly disposed portions 2 and at their upper ends with similar portions 3 but extending in an opposite direction as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. Each portion 3 is provided at its outer end with a flange 4: With which is engaged by means of rivets or other suitable fastening devices a rectangular plate or member 5. Each member 5 is provided with a centrally located aperture 6, and confined between the said members and the said flanges 4: is a sheet of foraminous material 7 The portion 2 at the lower end of each tube is provided with a telescopic pipe section 8 which is provided at its outer end with a flange 9, and the said flange has secured thereto a plate or member 10 provided with longitudinally extending guide flanges 11 in which a damper plate 12 is slidably engaged. The member 10 is provided with a centrally located aperture 13, and confined between the member and the flange 9 is a sheet of foraminous material 14.
The construction and arrangement of ventilators as herein shown are such that the portions 2 are disposed slightly above the floor G of the cellar of the structure and the portions 3 which extend in an opposite direction to the portions 2 are located above the surface of the ground as clearly shown and in view of the fact that the said portions 3 are each provided with a sheet of foraminous material at its outer end fresh air from the outside atmosphere is free to enter the tubes 1 and may be discharged into the cellar at a point adjacent to the floor C. The ventilator is also such that the floor of the cellar can be kept perfectly dry and the moisture or dampness prevented from accumulating upon the walls of the cellar above the portions 2 as will be readily understood and will consequently prevent spreading of dampness throughout portions of a building at points above the cellar.
I claim- A ventilator for use in connection with walls embodying a structure adapted for adjustment transversely to accommodate itself to the transverse area of the wall, the said structure comprising an elongated tube having oppositely extending right angularly bent tubular end portions, one end portion being covered by foraminous material, a sliding tube engaged with the other end portion, the said sliding tube having a flanged inner end portion, a plate disposed outwardly of the said flanged inner end portion of the sliding tube, foraminous material closing the inner end of the said sliding tube and confined between the flanged In testimony whereof I aifix my signature portion thereof and the said plate, the said in presence of two Witnesses.
plate having an aperture formed therein JAMES G CLARK.
and disposed in line with the sliding tube,
guide flanges formed upon the plate, and a WVitnesses:
sliding closure movable in the guide flanges HARVEY B. LEOKLIDER, to close the opening "in the plate. J. H. LECKLIDER.
