Letters Patent No. 96,413, dated November 2, 1869.

To all whom it may conce/m:

Be it known that I, L. P. FOLLETT, of Clifton Springs, in the county of Ontario, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that tbe following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of a washing-machine, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and op'- eration, referring to the annexed drawings, in which-4 Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and

A represents a tub or box, of suitable dimensions, resting upon legs B B.

Running lengthwise on the bottom of the boX A,

parallel with and a suitable dista-nce from its sides, are rails C C, between which, across the bottom, are

placed a series of small slats or ribs, D D, a con`ven' ient distance apart.

On'the rails C C runs the frame E, which takes up the full width of the box A.

This frame is at each end providedwith a roller or cylinder, G, the ends of which rest on the rails C C.

The cylinders G G are, onv their outside, between the rails C C, provided with slats or `ribs I I, placed at such distance apart that when the frame is moved back and forth in the bor, said slats will comein between the slats D D, in the bottom of the box.

The bottonrof the box A, at each end, is providedl with a curved piece or block, H, against which 'the rollers G G' strike when moved to either end of the box.

From the centre of the frame E a bar, J, projects upward a suitable. height, said bar heilig pivoted to the fraaie. It is then bent toward one end ofthe box A, where it is connected with a crank, crank-wheel, or other suitable device, whereby a. reciprocating motion may be contributed to the frame E.

The clothes are placedon the bottom of the box A, under the frame or carriage E, where they are `rapidly and thoroughly cleansed` by the action of the slats D'D and I Lgduring the rapid reciprocating m'otion of said carriage.
