UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
SETH LOCKWOOD, OF HOLLY, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentrNo. 69,567, dated October 8, 1867.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SETH LocKwooD, of Holly, in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Washing-Machines and I hereby declare that the following is a true, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the drawings annexed, which make a part of this specification, Figure I represents a perspective view of my machine with one side of the frameremoved.
The letter A designates' the body of my washingmachine, which is oblongin form, and slightly convex at bottom, the inner or concave side of the bottom being covered with zinc.
The body A is supported at its four corners by the legs Land each vpair of legs at opposite ends of body A are united or tied together by a bar, e, these bars serving as convenient handles for removing the machine to any desired place.
B represents a corrugated wash-board, the ends of which are let into the'sides of body A. The board Bis placed -at an angle of about forty-five degrees, and is intended to be used as a hand washboard, and maybe made of either wood or zinc.
D D represent two conical-shaped blocks, formed with a series of lateral depressions or steps, extending from the base to the apex,on opposite sides of said blocks.y l
From each of blocks D a shaft, g, ascends, the upper ends of saidshafts being penetrated by the rod s, on which they are allowed to play with a reciprocating motion, as hereinafter described.
The rod s, it will be seen, is pivoted in the two uprights G, and is supplied with the three rollers m, which serve to keep the shafts g in position.
E represents a metal rod, which is formed into the double crank n n, the two cranks being on opposite sides of rod E. The rod E has its bearings in the legs d d.
From each of the cranks n a pitman, h, ex-A tends to each of the shafts g, and is thereto pivoted. l
The letter H represents the two separate tops of the machine, and are made adjustable by resting inrabbets cut in the ends and sides of the body A. I
In operating my machine by means of the crank at the end of rod E, it will be seen that the two pitmen h and shafts g will at each revolution of rod E be driven in opposite di rections, thus causing the blocks D to pass each other with a rapid reciprocating motion, thereby producing the friction necessary to cleanse the articles with which they come in contact. A
Having thus described my machine, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The body A, provided with wash-board B, in combination with blocks or beaters D D, shafts g g, pitmen h h, and the double-crank rod E, when the whole are constructed, ar-
ranged, and operating as and for the purpose y.
herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I set my signature in presence of two Witnesses.`
SETH LOGKWOOD. `Witnesses:
FRANCIS BAKER, ELI MosHER.
