'TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: l
Beit known that we, ASA Hocxurr and ALBERT C. HocKE'rr, of Plainfield, in the county of Hendricks, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certaiu.new and useful Improvements in Tile-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompany-A ing drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of amachine for making tiles, which being less complicated than any'others now in use, is more durable and has less friction, and can be repaired at any country blacksmith-shop, without being sent to the foundry. Besides, from its great sim* plicity, it saves expense, by lessening the number of men and horses necessary to work it.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will' now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- K Figure 1 is a side view, part in section, of our machine.

A represents a frame, made of suitable material and dimensions, forming an oblong box, withboth ends open. On. thetpof this frame is placed a tub or other circular vessel, B, the-bottom of which is .provided on one side with a slot or opening,'which runs crosswise on the frame, as seen in iig. 1.
Over the top of the tub B is a bent cross-bar, C, iu which the vertical shaft D has its bearing. This shaft runs through the centre of the tub and down through the frame A, forming there a crank, E, and has its lower bearing in the bottom of said frame.
Inside of the tub, a series of arms, F F, is placed on vthe shaft D, which-serve to work the clay and pass it down through the opening in the bottom of said tub.
Inside of the frame A is a follower, Gr, which is attached to a sliding frame, H, at its front end, and at the rear end of this sliding frame is a vertical journal-bearing, I, from which a pitman, K, connects it with thecrank,l E. It will thus be seen that by turning the shaft, the follower G is made to mo've backward and forward alternately.
Near .the front end ofthe frame A, and a little forward of the farthestpoint to which the follower Gr comes, i-sinserted a. gravel-screen, L. 4This screen is inserted through a slot, made for that purpose, in the top of the frame, and consists of a frame, with upright bars, of suitable material and dimensions, and at suitable distance from each other, as shown in ig. 4. In the front end of the frame or box A is-placed the die M, which is so formed and arranged as to present, a' funnel-shaped surface'to the clay forced through it by the follower. x To the upper end of the shaft D, the power with which the machine is operated is by any suitable means attached. When the shaft D is turned,the machine is soarrangedIhat at the same time as the follower G is in rear of the opening in the bottom, of the tub B, the-lowest of the arms F forces the clay down through said opening. v The sliding frame and follower then press the clay through the gravel-screen L,separating it from all stone or gravel that may be in the same. As, byrepeated revolutions of the shaft, the space between the gravel-screen and the die gets filledv with clay, the follower at last presses the clay through the die, forming the tile of any length desired. i Y We are aware that the several devices hei-ein described, and their combination for the above purpose, is

What we claim as new, and `desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The arrangement of the frame or box A, tub B, sliding frame H, follower G, gravel-screen, L, and die M, all constructed as described, aud operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth'.
