RAIL-BRACE.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented July 12, 1910.
Application filedA November 26, 1909. Serial No. 530,008.
To all 'whom it may. concern:
lle it lmowirthat l, Joux C. SELLERS, a -citizen of the lulted States, residing at of the invention. such as will enable others-` skilled in the art to which it appertains to `inake and usc thel saine.
This invention .relates to continuous rail bracesf.-
The object ofthe invention is to provide a device of the character named which will el"- t'ectnally prevent rails from spreading: and thereby obviate the expense of respiking such independent braces or the rails themselves to the'ties at frequeutiriterv i., and j j p roperty travelingxover the road.
Jfurther object ot' the invention is to produce a brace ot'vthis character which is simple. strong' and inexpensive to inannlau-- ture and which can be easilyv and quickly placed in or removed from position.
With the above and otherobjects in view the invention `consists in the details ol construction and `in the arrangement and combination of. parts to be hereinafter more fulljY described and set forth in the claim.
in describing` the invention inde ail `reference will be had to the atx-ontpanying` drawings in which like. charactersdenote correspolnling;t parte:l in the several views, and-in which,
Figure l isa top plan View ofa fraginent of a `rail road track with the invention incorporated: and Fig. 2, a section on the line 2*-2 'of Figul.
ln applyingr braces to therails` it is desirable that one end, thereof be so constructed as to assistliu effecting a rail joint between the adjacent ends of two rail sections and as the joints ofrails occur at irregular intervals, the other end ofthebrace will simply serve as a chair `for the opposite rail.
'lo this end the' invention consists of two tie rods 3` and 4 provided with threaded inner ends 5 and 6 respectively, the end 5 having lefthand threads and the end 6 rightdiand threads.l Theouter end of the rod 4' is enlarged `and 'provided with the lower projecting arm 7 and the upper projectimgr arm 8, the arm 8 being considerably shorter than the arm 7. The recess formed between the arms 7 and 8 constitutes a-seat orsocketfor a projecting wing t) of a rail joint clamp member l() which'is bent inwardly as at ll `to form a` seat for one side ot' the base ot' the rail A. A bolt 12 is passed throne-h the arms 7 and 8 and through the, projecting wing-tl of the clamp plate 10, wlnn'ebythe latter is securely held in place. Another clamp member 13 is disposed on the opposite side of the rail A and likewise has itsl lower endbent inwardly as at 14 to form a chair for the base of thei rail A and abolt l5 is passed through the clamp plate 13 and the arm 7 to effect the attachment of said clamp plate to said arm. The upper ends ot' the clamps l0 and 13 are bound against the web of the rail A through the medium of a bolt 16 which passes through saidelamps and the web of said rail. The rod 3 has its outer end enlarged and pro- "vided with a forwardly projecting arm Il' upon which the base ot' thev rail l is adapted to rest. The outer end ol said arm 1T is bentupwardly as at 1S and then inwardly as at 1t) so as to forni a socket for the reception ofone side ot' the baseof the rail,
adapted to be shifted on itsl pivot so` as to passing' through said keeper, rail base andv arm 17 servcsto lock the keeper upon the base and positively secure. the rail to theA brace.
A turn-buckle 22 operatively en,-v gages thethreadedends 5 and 6 of the' tie rod whereby a rotation of said turlrbjuckle in oncdireetion will adjust the rails Aand B toward each other and `its rotation in the opposite direction will eti'eet thei adjustment awa-y from each other. One end of the turn-buckle is reduced and provided with a plurality ,of flat surfaces-so thatthe same may be readily engaged by a wrench to etfect the rotation of the turirbnckle 2Q and the adjustment of the brace.
lVhat. is claimed is:
A continuous rail brace, comprising a pair ot rods having their `inner ends threaded and connectedtoxrether by a turn-buckle; one of said rods navingits outer end rovided with. a lower arm to form a )ase plate and a relatively short up er arm, a pair of oppositely disposed rai (dampingr 'nieu'ibers having their lower portions bent the rail base; the outwardly AbentI 1301111011 of one of said clamping meinoutwardly and in\\'ardiy to forni a seat for and lnwardly bers being disposed in the seat ioinicd between the upper and lower ai'inS 0f said rod, means for forcing said ('lainping members toward each other; and means formed on the outer end of the other rod for supporting and positively engaging a rail base c0mp1is ing an alni having itsv outer end bent upwardly and inwardly to 'fnl-m a seat for one
