RAIL JOINT.
Patented May 5, 1885.

UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO W. AGIN, OF LATROBE, OHIO.
RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,272, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed February 3,1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALONZO W. AGIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Latrobe, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved rail 'oint. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 00 00 in Fig. -2. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line y y in Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a detail view in perspective of the nut-lock or fastening'plate.
The same letters refer to the same parts all the figures.
This invention relates to railway-rail joints; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, having for their objects to provide a railjoint having braces against depression or lateral expansion of the rail ends, and provided with a simple, inexpensive, and effective nutlock or fastening device.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A A designate the ends of a pair of rails connected by my improved joint.
B B are the cross-ties, and G G are the jointplates or fish-plates, each of which consists of a curved portion, D, fitting over the flange of the rail, a straight vertical portion fitting closely against the web, and alaterally-extending bottom flange, E, provided at the ends with lugs F F, adapted to rest upon and be secured to two of the cross-ties, and having a central laterally-extending foot-piece, G, connected by an inverted-V-shaped brace, H, with the body of the plate. The vertical portion of each plate is provided with perforations I I, through which the bolts of the railjoint may pass.
J designates a nut-locking plate, provided with a series of perforations, K K, adapted to pass over the outer ends of the bolts, and provided at the ends with openings L L, by means of which it may be adjusted up on slotted pins M M, extending from the ends of the outer joint-plate, and to which it may be secured by means of split keys N N. The plate J is provided'with a central inverted-V-shaped hood or cap extending over the upper portion of the brace H, thereby fitting the plate J to the latter, and performing the additional function of preventing the central portion of the said plate J from bending in an outward direction, thereby causing it to hold the several nuts upon their respective bolts with great firmness and stability.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. Its construction is simple and inexpensive, it is easily applied, and will serve efficiently for the purposes set forth.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- 1. In arailway-rail j oint-,a fish-plate or chair consisting of a curved portion fitted to the rail-flange, a straight vertical portion fitted to the web, a lateral bottom flange having a central laterally-extending foot-piece and end lugs, and an inverted-V-shaped brace connecting said foot-piece with the body of the plate, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the j oint-plate having a laterally-extending foot-plate and an inverted-V-shaped brace connecting the latter with the body of the plate, and provided at the ends with laterallyextending slotted pins, of the nut-fastening plate having a series of perforations and a central inverted-V-shapedhood, and the split keys serving to attach the said plate to the joint-plate, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
ALONZO W. AGIN.
