RAIL-CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,360, dated August-17, 1897. Application filed April 12, 1897. Serial No. 631,785. (No model.)

To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that L JAMES E. SHOPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunbar, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to a rail-chair for railways, and the object is to provide a chair which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and one by the employment of which the ordinary bolts and fish-plates used for joining the abutting ends of rails are dispensed with and the rails securely held in alinement and against spreading.

WVith this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view looking down upon the abutting ends of two rails and illustrating the application of myinvention thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the line as a: of Fig. l; and Fig. 3, a sectional view on line y 1 Fig. 1.

In the drawings, 1 denotes the ties or sleepers, and 2 the abutting ends of two rails.

3 denotes myimproved chair, which consists of a castingprovided with tie-securing arms 4, an upwardly-projecting-web-embracing head 5, provided with pins5 and a horizontal base 6, which projects under the base of the rails and supports the same and is provided with an aperture 7 and a cross-head 7, having a perforated boss 7. A chair thus constructed is cast in one integral piece.

9 denotes a clamping-plate which is adapted to lie against the outer side of the webs of the rails and is provided with holes 1 O,through which and the abutting ends of the rails the pins 5 of the web-embracing head project. This plate has an integral arm extending in the abutting ends of the rails and securely locking them in position against displacement caused by the vibration incident to a passing train.

Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elementsof my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is

A chair for railway-rails, comprising in combination, arms adapted to be spiked to the ties, and provided with an upwardly-extending web-embracing-head having outwa'rdly-proj ectin g pinsand an outwardly-proj ecting base adapted to support the rails, said base being provided with an opening and with a bolt-hole, and upon its upper side with a cross head having an apertured boss, a clamping-plate having holes to receive the pins aforesaid, and an inclined arm provided with a bolt-hole and a bolt passed through the boss and the said arm, and provided with a nut for clamping the parts, substantially as set forth.
