Specification of Letters Patent.l
Patented July 12, 1910.
Application filed November 6, 1909. Serial No. 526,535.
To att whom tt may concern:
Be it'lznown 'that I, FRANKMCMURRAY SAWYER, a citizenv ofQthe United States, residing at Charlotte, inthe county ofMecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tiles, of which the following is a specitication.
My invention relates to tiles for rooting and other purposes, and has for its object to provide a novel construction of the saine whereby the interlocking of the same will be materially improved.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved tiles. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a series ot' the same positioned with respect to each other. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through a series of the same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectionalv view on the line 4 4, Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
In the said drawing my improved tiles are indicated at l, the same being of the usual concave-convex con Ouration, and' each having formed therein near each end on its convex face a series oftransverse ribs 2, and on its concaved face a series ol cor responding depressions 3, lying directly op- )osite sa id projections, it being observed that both said ribs and depressions terminate on each side short of the edge of the tile.
' The particular advantage of this construction is that when said tiles are laid and overlapped longitudinally, the ribs Q in the underlying tile Will enter and engage the depressions 3 of the overlying tile, which will provide not only a lock between the two against longitudinal movement, but will also act to eft'ectually prevent any lateral tipping or sliding of the one with respect to the other, this result being'due to terminating said ribs and depressions short of the edges of the tiles. Alpe-rturcs 4 are provided for securing the tilrs in lace.
Having thus descri ed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A tile, .having formed thereon on one face a transverse rib, and on its 1other face a corresponding depression, directly opposite said depression and both terminating short of the edges of said tile.l
2. A tile, having formed thereon near each end on one side a series of transverse ribs, and on the other side a series of corresponding depressions, said ribs lying directly opposite said depressions and both terminating short of the edges of said tile.
3. A tile of concavo-convex shape, having formed on its convex side near each end a series of transverse ribs, and on its concave side a series of corresponding depressions, said ribs lying directly opposite said depressions and both terminating short of the edges of said tile.
In testimony whereof I atliX my signature. in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK A. Po'r'rs, W. A. EBERT.
