Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW J. SANFORD, a resident of Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Lighters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

,My invention relates to glass shades and supporting devices therefor, and especially to that type employed for lighting windows, pictures and the like. Its object is to provide a device of the character described, hereinafter termed a window lighter, suitable for carrying more than one electric light so as to distribute the light thorougly in the desired direction, and to provide a shade in the device of simple construction and of desired length.

To these ends my invention, or so much thereof as is herein claimed, consists, generally stated, in a device of the character de-' scribed comprising an oblong glass shade, or oblong integral shade adapted to carry a plurality of lights or bulbs in a convenient manner and provided with a plurality of necks corresponding to the number of bulbs and adapted'to support the same and to be attached to the improved shade carrying and adjusting device of my invention constituting with the shade the complete window lighter. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window lighter illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section showing a modification. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of one of the sections constituting the shade of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a like view illustrating another section. Fig. 6 is a vertical section illustrating a modified form of my invention. 7

In the simplest form of my invention the shade is made of a single integral piece hav-' ing the parallel side portions 2 and at least its surface. The shade is preferably supported by the device of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or frombelow by a suitable bracket as shown in Fig. 5. The frame of Figs. 1 and 2 has the body portion 5 which is preferably made curved to con form to the upper curved portions 6 of the window lighter or shade, and such frame is provided with a plurality of neck holders 7 corresponding in number with and fitting around the neck portions 3 of the shade, said neck portions being connected to the support by any suitable means such as by the screws 8 engaging with the neck portions Such neck holders have also the bulb supports 9 to which electric bulbs are connected in any suitable way. Such supports are shown as split rings 10 connected y screws 11 to clasp and hold the bulbs. The window lighters can be supported at any desired angle and for that purpose I have illustrated them as hung from chains 12, and in the pre ferred form the supports 5 have arms l-l extending outwardly therefrom to which the chains 15 lead from the main supporting chains l2, while the chains 16 extend down to the support 5 and being connected directly to the body thereof, as shown. In this way, by the adjustment of the chains 15 and 16 the window lighter can be adjusted at any desired angle, the outwardly extending arms 14: providing for the more firm or steadyets are arranged for adjustment at any desired angle, having the pivoted arms 19 curved to the curve or shape of the supporting frame and having a series of bolt holes 20 formed therein so that the supporting frame or holder can be attached to the arms19 of the bracket at any desired angle. This gives provision for the adjustment of the window lighter at the desired angle so as to throw the light either inwardly from the front of the window or outwardly or upwardly as may be desired. This device is claimed specifically in another opplication, Serial No. 522,849, filed by me.

To .provide for a long window lighter so as to accommodate any width of window or show case the lighter may be formed in sections as illustrated in Flgs. 3, 4 and 5, the

lighter being illustrated as formed of the end sections 25 and intermediate sections 26, each section having a neck for securing it to the holder or support. In this case I prefer to form the end portions with the .curved end sections 27 and with the flat inner end walls 28 and the neck portions 29, the flat interior end walls being employed to give strength to the shade and provide for the easier pressing of the same. In like manner the intermediate sect-ions have the arallel side portions 31 and the flat interlor end walls 32 and are provided with the neck walls 33, the flat end portions 32 of theintermediate sections fitting against the flat interior end walls of the end sections. Any desired number of intermediate sections may be employed according to the desired length of the window lighter. The supports 35 for these window lighters are made of suitable length according to the number of sections to be employed and they have suitable neck portions 36 corresponding in position to the necks of the several sections, the several sections being connected to the sup orts and the supports having the same bu b holders to support the electric bulbs or lights in the desire position within the several sections forming the window lighter. This construction, however, forms the subject matter of another application Serial No. 522,849 filed by me.

By my improved invention I am thus enabled to provide for the lighting of windows, pictures and show cases by means of two or more bulbs, distributing the light properly within the show case or window, giving proper support to the same, formin the same 0 any desired length, and provi ing for the adjustment of the window lighters at any desired angle so as to project the lights therefrom either upwardly or downwardly or at any desired Incline.

What I claim is:

1. "As a new article of manufacture, an oblong lass shade provided with a plurality 0 books for attachment to a support.

2. An oblong integral shade provided with a plurality of necks for attachment to a sup ort.

3. oblon integral glass shade provided with a p urality of necks for attachment to a holder, each neck being adapted to carry an incandescent bulb.

4-. A window li hter comprising an oblong shade provi ed with a plurality of necks and a support having corresponding neck holders, and means for securing the necks of the shade to said holders.

5. A window lighter comprising a shade havin an oblong body portion with a curve upper face and a plurality of necks attached thereto, and a support having a curved body portion fitting to said curved upper face and a plurality of neck holders and means for securing said necks to said holders.

6. A window lighter comprising a shade having an oblong body portion and a pluralityv of necks, and a support having a pluraility of neck holders, means for attaching said necks to said neck holders, and a bulb holder carried by each neck holder.

7. A window lighter comprising a shade having an oblong body portion and a plurality of necks, a support having corresponding neck holders encircling said necks, and bulb holders located within the neck holders and adapted to carry incandescent bulbs within the shade. I g

8. A window lighter comprising an oblong shade provided with two or more necks,

a supportprovided with two or more neck holders and means for attaching the necks to said holders, hangers for said support and means cooperating therewith for adjusting the angular position of the shade.

9. A window lighter comprising a shade having an oblong body portion, a support having a body portion attached thereto and provided with laterally extending arms, and hangers provided with means for attachment to said arms and said body portions respectively.

10. A wlndow lighter comprising an oblong shade provided with a plurality of necks, a support comprising a body portion extending along the upper portion of said shade having neck holders attached to said necks and arms projecting laterally from said body portion, and hangers attached to said body portion and having chains attached to said arms.

11. A window lighter comprising anoblong shade provided with a plurality of necks, a support comprising a body portion extending along the upper portion of said shade having neck holders attached to said necks and arms projecting laterally from said body portion, and supporting chains having branches connected to said arms and branches connected to. said body portion.
