Letters Patent No. 96,391, dated November 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN COPY-HOLDERS.
The Bchcduh referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern -Beit known that I, JOHN S; BUTLER, of Silver City, inthe county of Owyhee, and Territory of Idaho, have invented a new and improved Copy-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification.
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved copy-holder.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken through the line a: x, tig. 1. L
My invention has for its object to furnish a simple and convenient copy-holder, designed more particularly for com positors use, which shall be so constructed and arranged that it may be placed between the `upper and lower type-cases, occupying little space, and without covering up any of the typeboxes; and
It consists in the copyfholder, constructed as here- A is the front, and B is the rear side of the case of the copy-holder, the space between which is divided into two compartments or passages, for the reception and delivery of the copy, by the partition C, to prevent the copy from becoming folded or entangled while passing through the holder.
These passages come together in the lower part of the holder, but at its top, they are spread apart, as shown in tlgs. 1 and 2, to form a plate for the parts of the copy being used.
The upper part ofthe rear passage is enlarged, to receive the roller D, which is pi'voted to the end plates of the ease, A B C, and which is furnished wit-h a rubber or equivalent pad, E.
1 is a short friction-roller, placed upon a wire, pass ing through a tube, formed by turning over the upper edge of the rear side or plate of the holder, the elasticity of the pivoting-wirel holding the friction-roller down with suicient force to carry the copy along as required.
The roller is revolved, to carry the-copy forward, by l means'ot' a milled button, G, attached to the end of the axis of the saidroller.
H is a guide, running longitudinally across the face of the holder, attached. to the ends of arms, pvoted to the ends ot' the holder, and which is provided with rubber or metallic springs, to hohlA the said guide to` its place.
The guide H is designed more particularly to be used with reprint copy. With other copy, it may or may not be used, as may be desired.
When not in use, theguide H may be turned back out of the way.
In using thc holder, a notch or slot is cut inthe top of the lower case, to receive the spout-like lower end of the holder.
By this construction and arrangement of the holder, it will take up but very little space, and will not cover y any of the type-boxes of the cases, while, at the same time, it will hold the copy securely and conveniently. Haring thus described my invention,
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The case A B C, constructed with two com'partments or passages, as described, theroller 1) provided-with a,rubberfriction-bami, E, or equivalent,
and the pressure-roller F, in combination with each other, said parts being constructed substantially as f herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2.- In combination with the partition O, the guide H, attached loosely to arms projecting from the ends ot' the holder, all arranged as described, whereby the guide may be turned back out of the way, as and for the purpose hereinbefore described. v JOHN S. BUTLER.
Witnesses z O. M. H Ars, W. R. MGDANIEL.
