IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR BOOKING TOBACCO LEAVES.
The Schedule referred to In these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH WISE, of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Machine for Booking Tobacco Leaves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawing forming part of this specifi-;
cation, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of this invention.
Figure 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Figure 3 is a transverse section of the same. Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates-to a machine intended to flatten out tobacco leaves, a process technically known as booking.
My improvcr'nent consists in the a1rangement of a semi-cylinder, mounted on a platform, so that it can be swlveled round, and provided with two flaps, kept in contact with the semi-cylinder by the action of springs, and bearing on the surface thereof from opposite sides in such a manner that by raising one of the pressing flaps, the end of a tobacco leaf can be readily spread on the surface of the semi-cylinder and retained thereon when the flap is released, and after the leaf has been spread on the surface of the semicylinder, its other" end can be readily secured under,
the other pressing flap, the operation being facilitated by swiveling the semi-cylinder on its platform, and'by these means the operation of booking tobacco leaves is materially facilitated.
The surface of the semi-cylinder is convex in a transverse direction, whereby the elfect of my niachine is still further improved.
In the drawing- The letter A designates a semi-cylinder, made of wood, covered with sheet metal, or constructed of any suitable material.
This semi-cylinder is mounted on a pivot, a, rising from a platform, 13, so that it can be swiveled round in either direction.
On the face of the semi-cylinder are arranged two flaps, C, which are pressed up against the same from *tiansverse direction, (see figs. 2 and 3,) whereby the operation of booking is materially facilitated.
The operator places the apparatus before him and raises the flap furthest from him by pressing it back against the action of the springs. He thensprcads one end of a tobacco leaf on the surface of the semicyliuder under the flap, and releases the flap so that the endof the leaf is clamped upon the face of the semi-cylinder; he then continues to spread the leaf on the semi-cylinder up to the edge of the other flap, then he swivels the semi-cylinder round for half a revolution, raises the second flap and spreads the other 'end of the leaf under the same, when he releases this second flap and the operation is completed. A second leaf is then treated in the same way, and after a number of leaves have been spread on the semi-cylinder, the apparatus is allowed to standfor a short time, when the leaves are taken out ready to be used for wrappers or binders of cigars.
By these means eachleaf can be readily spread to its full extent, and all the leaves are brought in such a condition that they can be used to the best possible advantage.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire 'to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The semi -cylinder A, provided with pressing flaps 0, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the semi-cylinder A and pressing flaps O, of a platform, B, on which the semicylinder can be swiveled round, as set forth.
. 3. Making the surface of the semi-cylinder A c011- vex in a transverse direction, as shown and described.
This specification signed by me this 29th day of March, 1870.
Witnesses: JOSEPH WISE.
