Description

E. THOMPSON. v HAY SLING LOOK OR TRIP.
mrmoulon FILED MAR. 21, 1910',

WWI
WITNESS 6 IN VEN 0R Maw EDWARD THOMPSON, OF YORK, NORTH DAKOTA.
HAY-SLING LOCK OR TRIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 21, 1910.
Patented July 5, 1910. Serial No. 550,782.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD THOMPSON, citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of Benson and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay- Sling Locks or Trips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in hay sling locks, and it has for its object to provide suitable tripping mechanism housed in a casing to accomplish the purposes intended, that is for releasing the load from the sling, the latch tripping mechanism being of such a simple character as to be easily tripped, and when necessary can be readily and conveniently detached from the housing or casing, and when it becomes necessary new mechanism can be substituted for the old or the latter repaired.
A further object of the invention is to simplify, improve and cheapen the cost of construction of this class of devices over the eX- isting prior state of the art.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more in detail described and the asserted novelty specifically claimed.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my device assembled for operation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the line y-y of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the tripping head.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a suitable slotted housing or casing in which the mechanism is operatively housed.
B designates a horizontally disposed latch, the rear end of which engages in a horizontal slot Z) and is pivotally secured to a perforated movable ear C as at c, and its forward end is passed into the casing and detachably secured to and within the casing through the medium of a vertically disposed tripping head for a purpose which will be hereinafter more fully explained.
D designates another perforated ear which is formed integrally with the casing A and located diametrically opposite to that of the movable ear 0.
E designates a latch tripping head disposed in a vertical slot 6 intersecting with the horizontal slot 6, the upper end of which is passed through a perforation 6 formed in the upper portion of the casing A and has a perforation in its upper end for securing the tripping rope thereto.
F designates a wedge beveled at both ends and detachably secured in the bottom or underside of the casing A by means of an angularly directed bolt f, the tripping head keeping the latch B from pulling out of the casing A.
G designates a coil spring coiled around the tripping head E. By the latch B being pushed or forced into the longitudinal slot of the casing it looks itself against the tripping head until tripped or released by the tripping rope from the tripping head. The perforations in the ears of the casing are for the purpose of admitting the sling ropes to be passed therethrough which holds the load until released by the tripping head from the mechanism.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a casing providedwith horizontal and vertical intersecting slots, a vertical tripping head seated within the vertical slot, a coil spring coiled around the tripping head, a movable and stationary ear provided for said casing, a horizontal latch pivotally secured to the movable ear, the free end of said latch contacting with the lower end of the tripping head, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination with a casing provided with horizontal and vertical intersecting slots and perforated ears, one of which being movable and the opposite one stationary, a tripping head seated withinthe vertical slot and a latch pivotally secured to the movable ear and disposed in the horizontal slot and operatively engaging the tripping head, and a wedge detachably seated in the bottom of the casing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
