citizen of the United States, residing at- Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in` Mufflers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to mufflers,

sometimes called neckscarfs, or simply ,scarfsQ-and the objects of the invention are to provide new and useful constructions for mufflers.

Mufflers made according to this invention consist of elongated end members and a central V-shaped member formed integrally, and having parallel upper and lower marginal edges.

Other objects of the-invention are to provide special features of knitted construction vfor such mufflers whereby the neck bands'of suchl mufflers are 'prevented from becoming' misslrapen through stretching during use and'are maintained in shape to afford effective Vprotection to the neck -of the wearer whenv in use.

The invention consists in 'certain novel features of the construction and vcombinations and arrangements of the several parts of the improved muffler, whereby certain important advantages are attained, andthe device is rendered simpler, less expensive, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully4 set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.

In order that my invention may-be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings whereinf Figure 1 is a view showing the outer side of the improved muffler, the same being showin in an extended position; Fig. 2 is a and or portion of the improved muffler, showing the same in position for use, and-Fig. 3 is a 1 fragmentary detail view, drawn to an enlarged scale, and showing certain -features of construction of the. neck band or portion of the improved muffler.

As shown in these views, the improved muffler is constructed with a central neck bandor .portion 5, adapted to be passed around the neck of the wearer, and with ter= minal portions or aprons 1, -1 ofv Agreater width than said neck band or portion 5 and adapted to be lapped one over the other in a well known way, when the muffler is in use, so as to afford effective protectionfor the throat and chest of the-wearer. The neck' band or portion 5 and terminal portions or aprons 1, 1 of the improved. muffler are formed from knitted material, and are integrally connected end to end, and said muffler is provided with fastening means, as indicated at 6 and 7 on the drawings, capable of being detachably engaged for hold-l ing the device securely in place around the wearers neck in a well known way.

As shown on the drawings, the terminal portions or aprons -1, 1 of the improved muffler are made of greater width than the central or neck portion 5 of the device, and are each formed from a plurality of transversely extendedsections 2, 2 and'3, 3, integrally connected and alternating with each other,feach such section being formed from stitches arranged iii a series of ribs extended at inclinations to the length of the muffler.

As herein shown, the ribs of both sections 2 and 3 are extended at angles of about 45 tothe length of the muffler, and the ribs of one section, as 2, are inclined oppositely with "respect to those of the alternating sections 3, 3, whereby the said terminal portions or aprons 1, 1 areV given substantially equal extensibility'in ,both longitudinal andl transverse directions, in order that the original shape of the device may be the-better maintained during wear.

The central neck portion or band 5 of theimprovedmuffler, which is extended between said aprons orterminal portions l, 1 and is integrally joined thereto at its opposite ends,4 is formed 'from closely woven knitted fabric, so as to be adapted to retain its form and dimensions without stretching during use, while being at the same timesufficiently flexible a'nd yielding to conform closely to they neck of the wearer, and at its middle portion said neck band '5 is formed edge.

The bands or sections 8 and 9 are formed from.l stitches arranged in ribs 10, 10 at angles of approximately 45 to the length of the muffler as is clearly shown' in Fig. 3, and the ribs of each of said sections are oppositely inclined so that a point or projection 11 is produced at one edge of the muffler by the projecting joined ends of said ribs, and in practice it is usually preferable to form said point or projection 11 at the lower edge of the neck' band 5 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It is apparent that the inclination of the `ribs 10, 10 forming the sections 8 and 9 will also tend to produce a notch or recess 12 in the edge of the neck lband opposite to the point or projection 11 as is best shown in Fig. 1.

passing upwardlyin even lines over either shoulder from the extremity of the point or projection 11, which will then depend between the shoulders of the wearer. In this form the muffler will not only present a more ornamental appearance, but will be more effectually guarded against displacement when an outer garment is laced over it.

The improved mu er constructed according to my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature, and 4is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the closeness with which its neck portion 5 is adapted to fit to and protect the neck of the wearer without liability of becoming stretched or distorted during wear, and it will also be evident that the device is susceptible of some modification without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention', and for this reason I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise formation and arrangement of the several parts as herein set forth in carrying out my invention in practice.

Having thus described my invention, what I claimand; desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i

1. As a new article of manufacture, a knit scarf consisting in the combination of two elongated rectangular end members and a central V-shapedmember formed integrally and having parallelupper 'and lower Inarginal edges. 2.. 3. A mufller formed from knitted fabric having a cent ral portion adapted to be passed around the .wearer`s neck and formed from closely knitted longitudinally ribbed fabric, and terminal portions alined with andv integrally joined to the opposite ends of. said neckportion and adapted to 'be lapped one over the other upon the wearers chesthsaid neck portion being provided, adjacent to its central part, with two transversely extended knitted bands knittedl to produce ribs extended at opposite angles of inclination to the length of said neck portion, and affording a V-shaped recess at the upper edge portion of said neck portion and a V-shaped projection integral with and pendent below the lower 'edge of said neck portion. 4
