Be it known that I, JOSEPH SCHWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved pen holder for use in connection with two pens and provided With means for simultaneously moving the pens in opposite directions to project one from one end of the holder for use and incase the other in the holder, the object of the invention being to efiect improvements in the construction of pen holders whereby a single pen holder may be used in connection with two pens for different kinds or colors of ink and the said invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 is a plan of the pen holder constructed in accordance with my invention with one of the pens extended ready for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a detail plan of one of the pen carriers. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the other pen carrier. Fig. 5 is a plan of the stem which carries the gear, also showing the gear mounted therein. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view taken in the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the pen carrier shown in Fig. 4.

The stem 1 of the pen holder which may be made of any suitable material and of any suitable size and shape is provided at one end with a tubular casing 2 which has in its upper side a longitudinal slot 3. In the ernbodiment of the invention here shown, the stem 1 is formed with a plug 4 which enters the socket in o-ne end of a supporting stem or arm 5 which is disposed in the tubular casing 2 and is provided at its outer end with a slot 6 in which is disposed a gear wheel 7, the axle of which is indicated at 8. The enlarged portion 9 of the stem or arm 5 fits in the inner end of the tubular casing 2 and is provided with a socket for the reception of the plug 4 thereby both the stem or arm 5 and the tubular casing are detachably connected to the stem of the pen holder.

and is provided with inturned flanges 12 at its sides. It is also provided with a longitudinal inset portion 13 which is provided with openings 14 and forms a groove 15 in the upper side of said pen carrier. A stud or finger piece 16 operates in the slot 3 and is attached to the pen carrier 10. A pen 17 which is detachably mounted at the outer end of the pen carrier 10 may be of the form here shown or of any other suitable form.

The pen carrier 11 has its front portion 18 of tubular form and its rear portion of semi-tubular form, said semi-tubular portion 19 being on the lower side and having a longitudinal inset 2O provided with openings 21 and forming a longitudinal groove 22 in the lower side of said pen carrier 11. Said carrier 11 is provided with inwardly extending longitudinal flanges 23 which bear against the flanges 12 of the carrier 10. The said flanges at the side edges of the pen carriers being in mutual Contact coact with the finger piece 16 which operates in the slot 3 to prevent casual rotary movement of the pen carriers in the casing and hence keep the gear elements of the pen carriers in engagement with the gear wheel hereinafter described. The semi-tubular portions of said carriers 10 and 11 are of the same radius so casing 2 as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. The pen 24' in the pen carrier 11 may be of any suitable construction. The upper side of the tubular front portion of the pen carrier 11 is concentric with and within the radius of the upper pen carrier 10 so that the convveX or upper sides of the pens 17 and 24 in the said carriers are both presented to the upper side of the pen holder on which the nger piece 16 operates and, hence, the pen holder is held with the same side up when in use no matter whether the pen 17 or the pen 24 is employed.` The gear wheel 6 which is mounted between the semi-tubular portions of the respective pen carriers engages the openings 14, 21, of said pen carriers, said openings forming in effect teeth or gear devices for engagement by the spurs of the gear wheel 6.

It will be understood upon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings that when the pen carrier 10 is moved longitudinally in one direction by means of the stud or finger piece 16, the gear wheel 6 will be revolved and will cause the pen carrier 11 to be simultaneously moved in the reverse directhat they fit in the tubular tion. jected from the end of the pen holder and the other pen retracted and disposed within the casing out of use and out of sight and either of the pens may be almost instantly brought into the required position for use so that the same holder may be used in connection with two pens one of which is for use, say with ink of one color and the other is for use with ink of another color, or the pens may be of different ineness for making lines of different thicknesses.

It will be understood from the foregoing and by reference to the drawings that the stem together with the arm 5 which carries the gear 6 and the pen carriers may be readily withdrawn longitudinally from the tubular casing after the finger piece 16 has been detached from the pen carrier l0 and hence all the operating parts may be readily removed from the casing to enable them toy be cleansed or repaired.

I do not desire to limit myself to t-he precise construction shown and described and it is evident that modifications may be made therein within the scope of the claims.

Having described the invention, what I claim is l. A pen holder comprising a tubular casing having a longitudinal slot in one side, an arm in the casing and having an enlarged portion fitting therein, said enlarged portion being provided with a socket, a stem formed with a plug at its front end inserted in said socket, said stem bearing against Hence, either of the pens may be prol the end of said arm and one end of said tubular casing, a gear wheel mounted in said removable arm, a pair of semi-tubular pen holders longitudinally movable in the casing having gear elements engaging opposite sides of said gear wheel, said pen carriers being' in mutual contact at their side edges, and a stud or finger piece operating in the slot of the casing attached to one of the pen carriers.

2. A pen holder comprising a tubular casing having a longitudinal slot in one side, a gear wheel disposed in said tubular casing and having a bearing, a pair of pen carriers longitudinally movable in the casing, and disposed one above the other, the upper pen carrier being semi-tubular from end to end and the lower pen carrier having its major portion semi-tubular in form and its front portion tubular in form so that the upper side of said tubular portion of the lower carrier is disposed concentric with and within the radius of the upper' pen carrier, said pen carriers having gear elements engaging opposite sides of said gear wheel, and a stud or linger piece operating in the slot of the casing and attached to one of said pen carriers.
