SPARK-PLUG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1910.
Application filed September 3, 1909. Serial No. 516,068.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that L finneon WALZEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Bronx, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Spark-Plug, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to aspark plug for gasolene and similar engines which is so constructed that an objectionable accumulation of soot at the electrodes is efi'ectively prevented.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of-my improved spark plug; Fig. 2 a detail of the positive electrode, Fig. 3 a top view thereof, Fig. 41 a detail of a modification of said electrode, Fig. 5 a top view thereof, and Fig. 6 a side view of the upper part of a modified construction of the plug.
The porcelain insulator 10 of the plug has a ,collar 11 which is confined within a threaded casing 12 by means of a nut 18 as usual. The stem 14 of the positive electrode is provided with a threaded head 15 that engages the correspondingly threaded wall of a cap or pocket 16. The open top 17 of this cap has an inwardly extending 'arm 18 carrying the centrally disposed integral positive electrode 19. Cap 16 is filled with a charge of platinum sponge 20 which is confined within the cap by a wire screen or open work keeper 21 fitted against a shoulder 22 and extending across open top 17 In lieu of using screen 21, the top 23 of the cap may be provided with a number of perforations 24: as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5 said perforated top constituting in this case the open work keeper. So also the negative electrode 25 may be furnished with a cap 26 filled with platinum sponge similar to cap 16.
During the charglng and compression strokes of the piston, part of the explosive gas will be absorbed by the platinum sponge which thus becomes charged with said gas under pressure. After ignition has taken place and the piston has advanced and opened the exhaustports, this compressed gas will blow out of the open top of cap 16 to scavenge the electrodes and eject the soot into the cylinder. In this Way an objectionable accumulation of soot within the sparker is prevented, short circuiting avoided, and the life of the device prolonged.
I claim:
A spark plug provided with a cap, an inclosed charge of platinum sponge, an open work keeper that confines the platinum sponge within the cap, a first electrode centered upon the keeper, and a second coop- N. Y. this j crating electrode.
Signed by me at New York, 2nd day of September 1909.
