SPARK-PLUG.
Specification of Letters ratent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1918.
Application filed January 16, 1914. Serial No. 812,569.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. MOSLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spark-Plugs, of which the following is'a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in spark plugs and has for its object to provide cer ain improvements in the construction whereby a priming charge ma be conveniently introduced into the cylin er of an engine in close'proximity to,the electrodes of the spark plug.
A further object is to provide a spark plug with a priming device which is practica effective, and one which will serve to keep the points of the electrodes clean.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved spark plug,
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same, I
Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section taken in the plane of the line AA of Fig 2, showing the priming device closed,
Fig. 4 represents a similar view showing the priming device open, and
Fig. 5 represents m'det'ail side and end views of the operatin, "valve The tubular base of the plug is denoted by 1 and is provided with theusualscrew threaded portion on its inner end. The
base is also provided with an annular seat 3 v at the outer end of the bore 4.
The outercnd of the base is provided with an outwardly extended screw threaded portion 5 of reduced diameter for receiving a on 6. I
in insulating block? is provided with an annular flange 8, a tapered inner portion 9 and an outer portion 10.
An electrode 11 is centrally located in the block 7, and is secured within said block by any well known and approved means. The electrode 11 is also provided at its outer end with the usual thumb nut 12 for securing an electric wire to the plug. A. gasket 13 of some suitable packing material is interposed I between the seat and the under side of the the upper side of the flange 8 on the insulating block. The cap 6 when in position on the screw threaded portion 5 will clamp the flange 8 between the gaskets 13 and 14, thereby forming av gas tight joint between the base and the block, and will allow the block to expand slightly under the influence of heat to which the plug is sub'ected.
The top of the base 1 is provi ed with an 7 annular recess 15 surroundin the screwthreaded portion 5, and 'is a soprovided with a passage 16 in communication with thebore 4, through a port 17 in the base, opened or closed by a needle valve 18. This valve 18 is threaded into a bushing 19, which is screwed into the base 1, and is pro vided with a passage 20lwhich registers To prime an engine equipped'with my improved plug, a charge of liquid hydrocar bon is deposited in the annular recess 15, -W hich charge will, when the valve 18 is.
opened, flow through the passages 16, 20, valve port 17, into the bore 4, and will then pass down the block 7 and the electrode 11.
It will thus be seen that, by introducing a priming. charge into the. cylinder through the'bore 4, the electrode terminals, as well as the inner portion of the' block, will'be .kept-clean.--
.NVhatI claimisz- 1. In a spark lug, a base provided with a tubular bore tlierethrough, an insulating block therein, having an electrode," an an- "nular priming recess surrounding'said bore, a passage-leading. from said recess to the bore and a valve for opening and closing said passage.
. 2. In a spark plug. a base provided with a tubular bore' thercthrough, an insulating block therein havingau electrode, an annular priming I'OCCSS surroumling said bore a passage leading from said'rccess to the bore no I ing said passage.
In a spark plug, a base provided with a tubular bore thcrctln'ough, an insulating block therein having an electrode, an annular priming recess surrounding said bore, a bushing secured in -said base, a passage leading from the said recess to the bore and lock, and a valve threaded in said bushing adapted to open and close said passage.
4. In a spark plug, a base provided with a tubular bore therethrough, an insulating block therein having an electrode, an out wardly extending extcriorly screw threaded portion, a cap therefor for securing said block to the base, an annular primin recess surrounding said portion, a passage eading from said recess to the bore and block, and a valve threaded in the base for opening and closing said passage.
5. In a spark lug, a base provided with a tubular bore t erethrough, an insulating block therein having an electrode, an outwardly extending screw threaded portion, a cap therefor for securing said block to the base, an annular priming recess surrounding said portion, a bushing secured in said base, a passage leading from said recess through the bushing, to the bore and block and a valve threaded in said bushing adapted to open and close said passage.
6. In a spark plug, a base provided with a tubularbore, an outwardly extending exteriorly screw threaded portion, an annular priming recess surrounding said portion, a bushing secured in said base having a passage in communication with the bore, a passage lcading from said recess to the passage. in the bushing, and a valve threaded in said bushing provided with eutaway'portion adapted to coact with tile passage in the bushing for opening communication from the recess to the bore.
In a spark plug. a base provided with a tubular bore, an outwardly extending exteriorly screw threaded portion, an annular priming recess surrounding said portion, a bushing secured in said base having a passage in communication with the bore, a passage leading from said recess to the passage in the bushing, a valve threaded in said bush 111g provided with a cutaway portion adapted to coact with the passage III the bushing for opening communication from the recess to the bore, and a weighted handle for manipulating the valve, by gravity to hold the valve open when on one side of its center and closed-when on the opposite side.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this eighteenth day of December, 1913.
