SHADE-HOLDER COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, EDWIN F. PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of \Visoonsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shade-Holder Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a certain shade holder coupling for which Letters Patent of the United States, No. 831628, were duly issued to me on the 25th day of September, 1906, and it pertains more especially, among other things, to the peculiar construction and arrangement of the device for coupling the globe supporting collar to the socket, and the same is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of the several parts of my device in connection with a lamp socket and shade as they appear when coupled together. Fig. 2 is a side View of the lamp socket of an ordinary incandescent lamp. Fig. 3 is a side view of a coupling collar removed from the socket. Fig. t represents a shade supporting bracket, and Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the parts shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4: coupled together.
Like parts are identified by the same reference letters throughout the several views.
A represents a socket from which an incandescent lamp of ordinary construction is supported. The socket A is provided at a slight distance from its lower end with the annular bead B. C is a coupling collar which is provided with an annular bead E. F is the shade supporting bracket, which is provided with a plurality of resilient coupling fingers G and shade retaining screws H. The coupling collar C is made slightly larger than the bead B, so that it may be readily slipped over the same. The fingers G are respectively provided near their centers with grooves I for the reception of the bead B of the socket and such fingers are sufiiciently resilient to spring over said bead B as the bracket F is placed upon the socket A. When desirous to couple the said several parts together, the coupling collar G is first moved over and past the bead B of the socket. WVhen this is done, the bracket F is placed upon the socket and the fingers G are forced over the bead B until the grooves I of the lugs are caused to engage upon the annular surface of the bead B. WVhen this is done, the collar C, which has gers are sprung inwardly and previously been moved to the upper side of the socket, is brought back over the ends of the respective fingers G, whereby said fincaused to impinge firmly upon the bead B of the socket.
It will be understood that the collar C is of slightly greater diameter than the circle described by the beads K of the fingers, whereby as said fingers are sprung inwardly, said collar C is readily forced over said beads K until the groove J of said collar engages the convex surface of the beads K of the bracket, whereby said collar 0 will be retained in place upon the fingers of the bracket and the fingers of said bracket will be caused to securely engage the bead B of the socket, and whereby all of such cooperating parts are firmly secured together, said collar C being retained in place by the resilient action of the fingers G, which causes the bead K to firmly engage in the groove J of said collar.
It will be understood that the socket A, the bracket F, the electric lamp L, the shade L and shade supporting screws H are all constructed and arranged substantially as shown in my prior patent, and that my present invention pertains more especially to the mechanism by which the three cooperating parts, shown in Figs. 2, 3 and l are coupled together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a lamp socket pro vided near one end with an annular bead, a detachable coupling collar provided 'on its lower side with an internal groove engaging with a bead formed on the shade supporting bracket, and a shade supporting bracket provided with a plurality of fingers, said fingers being provided on their inner surfaces with grooves engaging with the annular bead on said socket, and on their exterior surfaces with beads engaging with the groove of the lower side of the coupling collar, the groove on said coupling collar being adapted when said parts are in place to register with, inclose and cover the beads on said socket and shade supporting bracket, whereby all of said parts are interlocked and secured together.
2. The combination of a lamp socket provided near one end with an annular bead, a detachable coupling collar provided on its lower side with an annular bead to facilitate moving the same when coupling the several parts of my device together, and with an internal groove engaging with a bead formed on the shade supporting bracket, a shade supporting bracket provided with a plurality of fingers, said fingers being provided on their inner surfaces with grooves engaging with the annular bead on the lamp socket, and on their exterior surfaces with beads engaging with the internal groove on its lower side of the coupling collar the groove on said coupling collar being adapted when said parts are in place to register with, inclose and cover the beads on said socket and shade supporting bracket, whereby all 15 of said parts are interlocked and secured together.
