To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EATON D. SARGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Y Vinchendon, in the county of \Vorcester and State of h/Iassachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Freezers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in freezers, and more especially in the construction of the outer or ice receptacle, and of the gearing frame. Its primary object comprehends the following: the production of an extremely simple, inexpensive and efficient apparatus of the type specified constructed in such a manner that the inner receptacle, or freezer proper, is held firmly in position by the gearing frame, which latter is itself locked in place by the action of the first-mentioned receptacle, thereby obviating accidental displacement of said frame and, in consequence, of said inner receptacle and the dasher mechanism associated with the same.
A structural embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but no limitation to the precise form of the elements and features shown therein is contemplated or intended, since equivalent or analogous parts or features may obviously replace the same.
Of the said drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved freezer, with the cover and gearing frame removed. Fig.
2 is a vertical sectlonal view showing the initial position of the gearing frame incidental to its attachment. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view showing said frame in position for operation. Fig. 1 is a fragmental side elevation of the upper portion of the freezer.

' to the characters marked thereon, A indicates, in a general manner, the outer or ice receptacle, B the cover therefor, C the inner receptacle or freezer proper, D the gearing frame, and E the dasher mechanism.
The outer receptacle A is constituted by a suitable sheet metal can of cylindrical shape, provided with a seat 1 and an opening 2 formed therein adjacent its upper edge and located diametrically opposite each other.
In the construction illustrated, the aforementioned seat is shown as in the form of a continuous bead, and as intersected by a short vertical slot 3 which extends above and below the same and opens through the upper edge of the can. The bottom of said can is inwardly dished to a slight extent, as indicated by the numeral 4, the dished portion being formed at its center with a bearing 5 which receives a suitable pivot (3 provided upon the bottom of the inner receptacle 0.
Seat 1 and opening 2 above referred to, serve to support the gearing frame D. This element, in the present instance, is composed of the following integrally-connected parts or portions, viz., a flat bar or strap-like portion 7 provided at its outer end with a reduced terminal 8 and at its inner end with an upstanding projection or boss 9, a skeleton or open portion 10 of substantially annular shape adjacent said boss, a catch 11 located at the opposite end of the frame from the bar or strap-like portion 7, and a web 12 connecting said catch and the skeleton portion 10. The boss 9 is formed with an interiorlydocated socket 13 which conforms to the shape of the square or otherwise irregularly shaped end 14: of the dasher shaft 15, adapted for reception therein, while the catch and skeleton portions 11 and 10 are formed with alining openings for the passage of the ends of the drive shaft 16, said shaft carrying at its inner end a gear 17 arranged to mesh with and drive a gear 18 fast upon the cover 19 of the inner receptacle C. The drive shaft is designed for operation by means of an operating handle 20 of suitable construction, adapted for attachment to the outer end thereof. The dashers for agitating the contents of the inner receptacle may be of any preferred type and may be connected to the dasher shaft 15 in any desired manner. They form no part of this invention, and, hence, require no extended description.
The catch 11 of the gearing frame is designed for cooperation with and for reception in seat 1. To this end, the upper portion of said catch is extended laterally, so as to form a shoulder, ledge or flange 21, which is given a slightly arcuate form, so as to enable it to conform exactly to the shape of said seat, wherein it is adapted to fit, (see Fig. 3). For the same reason, the front face of its body portionv is likewise convexed. The terminal lug 8 provided at the opposite end of said frame from the catch is of such a size and shape as to admit of its insertion through opening 2. The distance between the arcuate outer edge of the shoulder 21 and the shoulder or shoulders 22, resulting from the formation of lug 8, slightly exceeds the diameter of the can, as will be apparent from an inspection of F i 2. Consequently, when lug 8 is inserted dirough opening 2, incldental to the attachment of the gearing frame in place, and shaft 16 is slipped through slot 3, shoulder 21 will rest upon the upper edge of the can and be prevented from engagement in seat 1. To effect such engagement, it is, therefore, necessary to slightly elongate the can in the direction of the frame: this may readily be accomplished by exerting downward pressure upon handle 20, which has been previously shifted mto the position shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the can edge directly adjacent the catch will be expanded or forced outwardly until shoulder 21 comes into alinement with seat 1 and is received therewithin. When this takes place, it will be apparent that the inherent resilience of the can will have the effect of holding said shoulder in said seat, thereby locking the frame in position, said frame in turn effecting the retention of the inner receptacle C in place. It will also be seen that the lower portion of slot 3 will be closed by the body portion of catch 11, as shown in Fi 4.
Where a cover of the type shown in Figs. 1 and 3 is employed, it will be seen that the gearing frame is additionally locked agalnst displacement, since the peripheral side wall 23 of said cover will project downwardly across and fit directly against the outer face of the can, thus obviating the possibility of upward movement of shaft 16 so long as the cover is in use. Said wall 23, moreover, will serve to close the upper portion of slot 3, so that the entrance of warm air into the outer receptacle or can above the level of the ice contained therein is prevented. The dished bottom 4 of said receptacle or can serves to strengthen the same, as will be apparent, and also constitutes a slightly yielding support for the inner receptacle, which latter has its bottom preferably formed with additional supports 24, said supports, however, being of less length than the main pivotal support 6. The freezer, as a whole, may readily be carried from place to place by means of a bail 25 or similar device.
As further regards the two supports for the ends of the gearing frame, namely, the seat 1 and the opening 2, it may be stated that these supports are relatively movable, owing to the inherent resilience of the outer receptacle or can, to lock or unlock said ends, such movement being due to the elongation or expansion of the can incidental to the attachment to or detachment from the same of said frame. It may also be stated that during the time that the cover is in place such expansion is precluded, owing to the tight fit of the cover.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination, with a yieldable outer receptacle provided with a pair of supports;
of an inner receptacle arranged within the outer receptacle; and a gearing frame extending across said outer receptacle and associated with the inner receptacle, said frame having its ends removably engaged with said supports and held in such engagemept by the resilience of said outer receptac e.
2. The combination, with a yieldable outer receptacle provided with a pair of supports; of an inner receptacle arranged within the outer receptacle; and a gearing frame extending across said outer receptacle and associated with the inner receptacle, said frame having its ends removably engaged with said supports, the distance between said ends being greater than that between said supports, to expand said outer receptacle incidental to such engagement and to hold said frame against displacement by the tension exerted thereon.
3. The combination, with a yieldable outer receptacle provided with a seat and an opening; of an inner receptacle arranged within the outer receptacle; and a gearing frame extending across said outer receptacle and associated with said inner receptacle, said frame being provided at one end with a lug arranged for insertion within said opening and at the other end with a shoulder arranged for reception in said seat, said lug and shoulder being maintained in engage ment in said opening and seat, respectively,
by the resilience of said outer receptacle.
4. The combination, with a yieldable metal receptacle provided with an opening and a seat; of a gearing frame provided at one end with a lug arranged for engagement in said opening, and at the other end with a shoulder arranged for engagement in said seat, said shoulder being arranged to expand said receptacle in one direction duringits movement into such engagement; and a receptacle arranged within the first-named receptacle and associated with said frame.
5. The combination, with a receptacle provided with a pair of supports, and with a slot intersecting one support and extending above and below the same; of a gearing frame extending across said receptacle and having its ends removably engaged with said supports, one of said ends being arranged to close the lower portion of said slot; a dasher mechanism associated with said frame; and a cover fitted on said receptacle and arranged to close the upper portion of said slot.
6. The combination, with a yieldable metal receptacle; of a gearing frame removably attached to said receptacle and arranged to expand the same during its attachment thereto and removal therefrom; and a rotatable body arranged within said receptacle and associated with said frame. I
7 The combination, with a yieldable metal receptacle; of a gearing frame removably attached to said receptacle and arranged to expand the same during its attachment thereto and removal therefrom; a rotatable 5 body arranged Within said receptacle; and a cover arranged to fit on said receptacle, to preclude such expansion.
8. In an apparatus of the class specified, the combination, With a gearing frame; of a receptacle provided With a pair of opposed supports therefor, said supports being relatively movable to lock and unlock said frame; and means arranged for attachment to said receptacle to preclude such move- 15 ment.
9. In an apparatus of the class specified, the combination, With a gearing frame; of a receptacle provided With a pair of opposed supports therefor, said supports being relatively movable to lock and unlock said frame; and a cover arranged to fit upon said receptacle, to preclude such movement.
