Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1910.
Application fled April 12, 1910. Serial No. 554,956.
To all whom it my camera: v
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM BERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new an useful 1m rovements in Straw-Dispensers, of which tlie following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in to be used at soda fountains and the like, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of m invention is to provide a retainer for holding the. straws which will keep them in a sanitary condition, free from dust and erms, and which will permit them to be rea ily withdrawn for use.
r A further object :of my invention is to provide means for raising the straws into position for extraction from the receiver, so that the latter will automatically assume osition.
A rther object of my invention is to provide a device in which the straws'may be instantly brought into a compact mass for retention in the holder.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the device will be partici'llarly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention in operative position, and, Fig. 2 is a cylindrical sectionshowing the device closed.
Referrin now to the drawings, I have shown a cy indrical holder A, which may be made of metal, glass, paper, or any other suitable material. This holder is provided with a bottom 0. having a central erforation or opening a therethrough. ithin the holder A, I arrange aslidable carrier com- B, at the bottom end of which is secured a cylindrical member C which fits inside of thecylinder A. The means for securing the member C to the rod B is preferably a screw D. 'At the top of the rod B is secured a plate or cover E, which has an integral screw F by which it is attached to the rod B, and is provided with an shown in Fig. 2, the resilient cushions straws. Now by simply lowerin upwardly extending handle G, terminating in a rosette or other ornamental knob H. To the. under side of the bottom member C of the carrier is secured a layer of resilient material K, while above the member is secured a similar layer L. The bottom of the plate or cover E is also provided with a piece of resilient, material M. At P I have shown two stain d portions, which form inwardlyprojecting lugs to limit the movement of the-carrier. 1
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, t e operation thereof may be readily understood. In filling the receiver, the handle H is grasped and the carrier is lifted until itsbottom engages .the lugs P. The straws S are then placed in the receiver and tend to assume the positions shown in Fig. 1. Now by lowering the handle, the cover E will come into contact with the-top of the receiver, while the straws will assume the posigoifi 7 and M rendering the device noiseless. Now when it is desired to extract a straw, the handle H is grasped and ulled upwardly, and as the upper ends of t e straws emerge from the receiver they tendto spread out in the positions as shown in Fig. 1, beyond the edges of the handle H. At the same time their upper ends will 5 read. This permits the ready extraction 0 -one or more of the the carrier, the straws Wlll instantly be orced into the compact position shown in Fig. 2. The opening serves to permit the entrance and exit of air and insures the easy operation of the device.
The holder is of light weight and ma be readily transferred. It may be place on the counter and forms a neat and attractive article, besides keeping the straws in a sanitary condition.
I claim:
1. In a dispensing apparatus, an outer cylinder having a perforation in its bottom, a carrier comprising a central rod, a lower late arranged to fit within said outer cylinder, an upper plate secured to said rod and constituting a cover for said outer cylinder,
and an integral handle projecting upwardly I from said cover.
2. In a straw dispensing device, an outer Q I v 962,300
