VIIIIIIIII l UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
ALFREIS PENOVI AND HARRY A. IBREENE, F PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK.
WASHBOARD.
To all whom Lt may concern: l
Be it known that we, ALFRED PENovI and y vHARRY A. BREENE, citizens of the United States, residing at Port Chester, in the county of Westchester and State of' New York, have invented certain new and useful Inprovements in Washboards, of which the fo owing is a specification. I
Our invention relates to im rovements in washboards and the objects o our improvements are simplicity and econom in construction andconvenience and e ciency in use.- 1 l In the accompanying drawin Fi ure 1 is a front elevation of the wash oar with one lower corner in section. Fig. 2 is a rear v elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same on the line m of Fig. 1',
, together with p art of a wash tub in section.
Fig. 4, is an end view of the same. Fig. 5 is an end view of a modification of our washboard. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on'the line y y of Fig. 1. A is the body v of our washboard, made preferably of a strip. of sheet metal, as of galvanized iron or zinc, of uniform width, having the lower portion 1 corrugated to Vform the rubbing surface, a sharp essentially 90 bend and return near the top to form the lower dam 2, and the surface above the same generally flat up to the top which-is bentupvwardvat 90 toform an upper dam 3 having the. extreme outer end turned over into a loop 4. Flush with the sides of the said b ody A, are two side strips'B also'of sheet metal, one oneach'side, extending the entire length of the said body A from the upper? 'dam.3, past the lower dam 2, along the cor-i .rugatedportion 1,'and also extending below downwardly part of the said corrugated thesaid lower ortion 1, the said extended portion having ateral holes 5, 'one on each of said side strips B to form bearingsfor rotatively mounting a roll C. The said side 'strips-have inwardly turned flanges 6 which. bear along the bottom of the said body A, and downwardly projecting ears -7 projecting from said flanges 6 nearthe lower portion 1 to which are adj ustablymounted 1n some suitable manner, as by screws .8 and nuts 9, roject' legs D. The height of the said si e stri lsn along the upper slde is such as to exten 4well above-the corrugationsof the said corrugated lower portion 1 together.
dam 3. The extreme bottom edge of the said body A, below the said corru atedlow'er portion 1 is turned back over t e said inwai'dlv turned flanges 6 and is rigidly attached to the same, forming a strong and reliable binding for securing the said parts The said body A and side strips B are rigidly united at all points of contact in some suitable manner, as by soldering,
being thus made water ti ht generally at such points of contact an` particularly so along the corrugated lower portion 1 of said body A and at the ends of said lower dam 2, so that the said lower portion 1 or rubbing portion of the washboard is inclosed at the sides and topvby a dani or wall impeding the overflow of water at the sides and the splashing of water upward against the operator, resulting in a more eiicient use of vwater and washing fluid and comparativevof washing. v The roller C. is rotatively mounted between the ends ofthe said side strips B and forms the extreme lower portionof the washboard.' Adjusting screws 10 proj vided with nuts11,pass through holes in the said upper flat part of said body A, and the side strips B, and through longitudinal slots 12 in the two arms of an adjustable supporting frame E. This adjustable supporting nere., the two arms provi ed at the top with hooked ends 13, sultable for hookingonto frame E is made preferably or malleable iron, of essentially U lsha e with square corthe edge .of the tub F, the outward downl 'wardly projecting end ,14 provided with springs V15,:for bearingy against the side of `the tub F. The said adjustable supporting frame E through the-saidhooked ends 13,
'serves as the general main support for .the board and through the said slots 12 and ad'- 'usting screws 10 and nuts 11 ermlts of longitudinal adjustment of the said body A of the washboard, and the said adjustable legs D; bearing at their lower ends against the side of the tub F, serve as an adjustable lateral su port, so that in use the working part of t e board may be adjusted as to4 eight and inclination and' furthermore is sustained clear of the bottom 16 ofthe tub,
there bein no legs projecting downward `in the way, t e extreme lower art ofl the board consisting of simply the'rol er C, as has'been mentioned above. The said roller C makes easier the pulling the clothes up onto the rubbing corrugated lower portion 1 ofthe b ody A and incense uence thereof saves in wear .and tear of clot es as well as labor of the-individual.
. The description given applies to aboard particularly adapted for a stationary'or set ftu'b with a (plane front side, but thejsame may be use 20 lindrical tub, though in such a case it would for an ordinary portable,
be better 4to use'a special supporting frame as E15 Fig. 5,'having a specia formation'of i "the hooked ends 13a.
`In 's ecial cases it might be desirable to make eA adjustable lateral supporting legs D of special length. or shape, and other l features ma be changed in detail.
" 'j extreme lower portion.
As descri d, our washboardis made 'enu tirely Otmetal; andconsequ'entlyconstitutes features, of adjustable legs', an adjustable v supporting frame, and a roller forming' the a sanitary washb0ard,'having the especial 1 'It is apparent, that some changesirom the specific construction herein disclosed may be lmade, andtherefore we do not4 wish' to beunderstoodas li miting.ourselves to the pref cise `form of construction shown and de- Yi: seribedfbut desire'the liberty to. make such changes, inwerking our invention, 'as may v fairly come withinsthe spirit and scope of y We claim as our invention: j A
jl. A washboard 'having' a body mounte between side pieces, the said body made of ale strip of metal, generally rectangular,` `comprisin a bottom edge thev general .sin 8.11
