SPECIFICATION forming part 'of Letters Patent No. 285,256, dated September 18, 1883.

To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, IsAAc T. GREENE, of Milford,. in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Hand-Rubber for Clothes-Washing, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciIic-ation, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of the same, taken through the line a" fr, Figi I.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the washing of clothes.
The roller-carrying plate is secured to the holder detachably by spring-catches, and the rubber is provided with a handle for convenience in operating it, as will be hereinafter C is a handle, the ends of which `are connected with the sides of the holder A B by uprights D, which may be attached to or formed upon the said handle, and which are attached to the sides of the holder A B by rivets or other suitable means.
E is a plate, of sheet metal or other suitable material, of such a size as to fit into the interior of the holder A B. Theends of the plate E have upwardly-projecting flanges E formed upon or attached to them, which extend upward along the inner sides of the ends of the holder A B, so as to keep the plate Eparallel with and at a suitable distance from the holder-plate A. Upon the side edges of the plate E are formed, or to them are attached, downwardly-projecting iianges E2, in which are ]'ournaled theends .of a number of rollers, F.
The rollers F may be made smooth, or they may be grooved or corrugated transversely; but I prefer to corrugatethemlongitudinally, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The latter construction is preferred, as giving the rollers a better hold upon the clothes, and thus .making them "more effective.' The ends of the anges E2 should be beveled or rounded to prevent them from catching upon the clothes.
To the edges of the The plate E should be about upon a level with or a little above the lower edge of the flange B, so that the rollers F will project below the said flange B, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The plate E and its attached rollers are secured to the holder A B by springcatches G, attached to the middle side parts of the said plate E, and which project into apertures II in the side flanges B and the handle-upright D, so as to hold the said plate E and its rollers F securely in place. By this construction a space or chamber is formed between t-he plates B E to receive a cake of soap, as indicated in Figs. l and 2. The plate E has a number of holes, I, formed through it for the passage of water, so that as the rubber is operated the friction of. the soap upon the plate E may forni a sudswhich will be applied to the clothes by the passage of the water through the apertures I in the plate'E. The plate E can he detached for the insertion and removal of the soap by pressing the spring catches G inward. In using the rubber a piece of soap is placed in the chamber of the said rubber, the clothes to be washed are spread evenly upon an ordinary washingboard, and are held and adjusted with one hand, while the rubber is moved back and forth over them with the other hand, by which operation the clothes will be washed quickly and thoroughly.
I am aware that it is not new to combine, ina washing-machine, wheels and rollers with a reservoir arranged on the wash-board, provided with a valve and having a perforated bottom, or a rubber with rollers, flanges, and a perforated plate, or to combine a suspended vibratory rubbing-board with a concave of rollers in a vat or tank; but
