DOOR-SUPPORTING CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1910.
Application filed June 5, 1909. Serial No. 500,280.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANcrL B. lVIORSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Freedom, in the county of Saul; and State of WVisconsin, have invented a new and useful DoorSupporting Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of the invention are, generally, the provision in a merchantable form, of a device of the class above described, which shall be inexpensive to manufacture, facile in operation, and devoid of complicated parts, specifically, the provision of a clamp adapted to be assembled with the casing of a doorway, to hold the door proper on one edge, while the gains for the butts are being cut, while the edge of the door is being planed, or while other mechanical operations incident to the hanging of the door, are being carried forward; other and further objects being made manifest hereinafter as the description of the invention progresses.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, delineated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in that portion of this instrument wherein patentable novelty is claimed for certain distinctive and peculiar features of the device, it being understood, that, within the scope of what hereinafter thus is claimed, divers changes in the form, proportions, size, and minor details of the structure may be made, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to denote corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawmgs.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows my invention in perspective assembled with the casing of a doorway, the door proper being held in vertical position by the device; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a modified form of clamping means, the por-' tion of the device wherewith the clamping means is assembled being shown in section.
The improved door supporting clamp forming the subject matter of this application for Letters Patent, comprises, primarily, a body denoted generally in the drawings by the numeral 1. This body 1 comprises a web 2, one edge of which carries a flange 3 arranged to extend laterally upon either side of the web. The body 1 is terminally overbent to form a fixed jaw 4, and an arm 5 is provided, which is arranged to be assembled, in sliding relation, with the body 1, and to project laterally therefrom, upon the same side as the fixed jaw 4. The arm 5 terminates in a head 6 which is provided with an aperture arranged to receive the body 1. This aperture in the head 6, conforms in general contour, to the cross section of the body 1, but is somewhat larger in cross-sectional area, than the body 1, so that the arm 5 may be tilted slightly to cause the same to engage the body in gripping relation. The terminal of the arm 5 remote fromthe head 6, carries a bearing 7, having a threaded aperture in which is mounted a clamp screw 8, upon the end of which is rotatably mounted a button 9. This clamp screw 8 is adapted to cooperate with the fixed jaw 4 in engaging a support.
Disposed upon the opposite side of the body 1 from the arm 5 and the fixed 4, is a standard 10 integral with the Web 2 of the body. This standard 10 is terminally overbent as denoted by the numeral 11, and carries, in its overbent portion, a bearing 12 having a threaded aperture to receive a clamp screw 14, carrying at its extremity, rotatably, a button 15, similar to the button 9 which is assembled with the clamp screw 8. The axis of the clamp screw 14 is disposed substantially normal to the axis of the clamp screw 8, the first-named clamp screw being adapted to cooperate with a fixed jaw 18, disposed in a plane parallel to the plane of the button 15, and integral with the body 1 and with the standard 10. The standard 10 is similar in cross section to the body 1, and comprises a flange 16 and a web 17. This construction which enters prominently into the device, causes it to have great strength to resist the thrust of the clamping members.
The fixed aw 18 is provided, upon its rear face, with an integrally formed web 19 which at one end unites with the web 17 of the standard, the other end thereof being supported by an extension 20 which unites with the web 2 of the body.
The particular clamping means embodied in the clamp screws 8 and 14 will be found useful under average conditions, butthe particular form of clamping member embodied in the elements 8 and 14 need not be adhered to rigidly. For instance, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the clamp screws 8 and 14 may be replacedby a simple cam lever 21, which may be mounted in the members 7 and 12 in any manner whereby it may exercise Itmay,however, be said that the casing of the door may be introduced between the fixed jaw 4: and the button 9, the clamp screw 8 being rotated to cause the device to engage the casing. The door proper may then be set up edgwise, and inserted between the fixed aw 18 and the button 15, the clamp screw 14 then being rotated to cause the parts to hold the doorin place and in position. i r
The device is compact in form, and it furnishes a means whereby a door may be held edgewise to receive any alterations which the joiner may desire to make, and it may be noted, that these alterations, by the use of the device, may be made in the immediate locality where the door is to be hung, the
necessity of transporting the door to a remote work bench being obviated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A device adapted to supporta .door while the edges thereof are being dressed, the said device comprising a body terminally proable aw and operable independently of the fixed jaw to cooperate with the fixed jaw in engaging a support; the body being provided with a rectangularly disposed standard having its end overbent; a clamp adjustably mounted in the overbent end of the standard and operable at right anglesto the first named clamp; there being a fixed jaw formed integrally with the standard and the body at their point of union, and arranged to cooperate with the last named clamp in engaging the door to be dressed, the last named fixed jaw being arranged tooutstand from the standard, and likewise to'outstand from the body beyondthe movable jaw. y
