FRANK EUGENE THOMPSON, OF LAKE CITY, FLORIDA.
COLLAPSIBLE DRUM.
Application filed December 15, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK EUGENE THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake City, in the county of Colrunbia and State of Florida, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Drums, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in collapsible drums, and the object is to provide means whereby the shell can be assembled readily and the heads connected to the shell.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the drum; Fig. 2 .is a view showing two of the sections of the shell connected together; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View; and Fig. 4 is a view of one of the heads of the drum folded.
A represents the shell of the drum, which is made in sections, preferably four, each section being connected to the other by means of hooks and eyelets, 1 and 2. Plates 3 are formed upon the sections for forming a tight joint, the plate on. one section overlapping the plate on the other section, so that the joint is sealed. The drum head is provided with reinforcing strips 4t and 5, which are semicircular in shape and are connected to the drum along the edges thereof. The two strips are hinged together, which allows the head to be folded as indicated in Fig. 4. The strips 4 and 5 are adapted to extend down along the exterior of the shell A. EX- tending around the edges of the drum are rims (3. These rims are made in sections, and are hinged together by hinges 7, 7. The hinges are connected together by means of cotter pins 8, although they might be connected by bolts, but I have only disclosed the connection by means of cotter pins, as this forms an easy means of disconnecting the sections, when it is desired to fold the drum. These rims rest upon the strips 4 and 5, which are around the edge of each I Specification of Letters Patent.

head. The rims protrude beyond the heads 13 of the drum, and connecting the two rims together are vertical bolts or rods 9, 9. Hooks 10 are on one end of the rods, and hooks 11 have screw threaded engagement with the other terminals or ends of the rods 9. These hooks 10 and 11 are adapted to be placed over the rims 6, and upon turning the rods 9, the rims will be drawn toward each other, which causes the drum to be tightened, to obtain the proper tone.
I have disclosed a structure which can be readily assembled, and the parts easily disconnected, whereby the shell can be sepa rated into four sections, allowing it to be packed in a small case. 30th heads are capable of being folded, which allows them to be inserted into a case, and the rims, which are provided with hinges, can be folded upon each other and placed in the case. By providing means whereby a drum can be collapsed and placed in a small case, it can be easily transported from place to place without much trouble. It is generally the custom to take a drum, and especially the bass drums, in their normal shape, or shape in which they are operated.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r- 1. A collapsible drun comprising a segmental sectional shell, said sections removably connected together, heads mounted upon the shell, rims made in sections and connected to the heads, and means for drawing the rims toward each other for tightening the heads upon the shell.
2. A collapsible drum comprising a segmental sectional shell, foldable heads n1ounted upon the shell, rims made in sections, said sections being removably connected to gether, and means for engaging the rims for drawing them toward each other for tightening the heads upon the shell.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK EUGENE THOMPSON.
