COLLAPSIBLE SLED.
Application filed April 17,
Z '0 all 'w 7mm it may concern Be it known that 1, MAX BnoWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and
. tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Sleds, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to improvements in collapsible sleds, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character which is adapted to be folded in compact form and which is durable and eificient in use.
My invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by I reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collapsible sled embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 a view showing the same collapsed.
Fig. 3 a side view of the sled showing the same partially collapsed.
Fig. 4 a bottom plan view of the same showing the same partially collapsed.
Fig. 5 a detail view of a knee-joint construction employed-in the sled.
Fig. 6 an enlarged section taken on line 66 of Fig. 5, and
Fig. 7 an enlarged section taken on line 77 of Fig. 5.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises side angle bars 8 and angle runners 9 positioned thereunder and collapsibly connected thereto by means of foldable links 10, there being two sets of said links connecting each side bar and its corresponding runner. Each of said links 10 is pivoted to the corresponding side bar and runner and the members of each pair of said links pivoted together at the point 11. Each link is provided with a shoulder 12 adapted to contact with the corresponding side bar or runner to limit the outward swing thereof, and with a lug or ear 13 adapted to contact with a similar lug or ear on the other link, also to limit the outward swing thereof and stiffen and strengthen the construction. By this arrangement it will be observed that each side bar 8 will be securely and readily supported from the corresponding runner 9 when the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4,1921. 1918. Serial No. 229,046. 1
links 10 are swung outwardly as shown in Fig. 1, but that by raising the'side bars 8 the links 10 may be readilyswung inwardly as indlcated in Fig. 3, thus breaking the knee-j oint formed and permitting of the 001- lapsing or folding of the side bars onto the runners.
The opposite sets of links 10 have their pivotal joints 11 connected by links-14 which are pivotally connected at their inner ends and each pair of which is provided with a lug 15 adapted to'engage a notch 16 to limit the swing of said links and form. a knee-joint between the opposite sets of links 10 which when the side bars 8 are collapsed onto the runners 9 assume horizontal and parallel positions as indicated in Fig. 4 and may be readily broken or swung outwardly to permit of the approach of the opposite side bars and runners as indicated in Fig. 4. Likewise the side bars are connected by a similar set of links 17 having lugs 18 engaging notches 19 forming a kneejoint connection between said side bars which may be readily folded as indicated in Fig. 4. By this arrangement, it will be observed that after the side bars have been folded onto the runners, the opposite side bars and runners may be again folded on to each other, thus assembling the parts into compact form.
The top of the sled consists of two transverse bands or straps 20 of canvas or other suitable material, having one of their ends permanently secured to one of the side bars 8 and the other ends equipped with metallic plates having key hole slots 21 therein adapted to engage studs 22 on the other side bar 8 as shown. Longitudinal slats 23 are secured to the bands 20 constituting the top of the sled and a strap 24 having a buckle 25 is arranged on each band 20 under the slats 23. By this arrangement, it will be observed that when the frame of the sled has been collapsed and folded as above described, the foldable top of the sled may be readily folded about said frame and secured in place by means of straps 24 and buckle 25. It will thus be observed that a sled is provided which may be readily collapsed and folded into compact form or readily disetended in usuable form and which is strong and eflicient in use.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
.Having described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A sled comprising a collapsible frame having runners; transverse flexible straps. arranged at the top of said frame, said straps being permanently secured at one side and detachably secured at the other side; and longitudinal supporting slats secured to said transverse straps and arranged to be folded about said frame when collapsed, substantially as described.
2. A sled comprising a collapsible frame having runners; transverse flexible straps arranged at the top of said frame, said straps being permanently secured at one side and detachably secured at the other side; longitudinal supporting slats secured to said transverse straps and arranged to be folded about said frame when collapsed; and means at the opposite ends of said straps for securing said ends together when said slats are folded about said collapsed frame, substantially as described.
8. A sled comprising a collapsible frame consisting of two side frames, each of said side frames consisting of a top bar and a bottom runner, collapsibly connected together; flexible transverse straps permanently secured to one top bar and detachably secured to the other; longitudinal slats permanently secured to said straps; a buckle at one end of each of said straps; and a strap end at the other end of each strap adapted to engage said buckle, substantially as described.
4. A sled comprising a collapsible frame consisting of longitudinal side bars; runners positioned under said side bars, each runner being connected with a corresponding side bar by a knee-joint; transverse knee-joint members connecting the kneejoints on opposite sides of said frame; and a flexible top extending between said side bars, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAX BROWN.
