CHARLES NEBLETT, OF BELLEVUE, KENTUCKY.
BOILER-BRACE.
Application filed May 21, 1908,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES NEBLETT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Bellevue, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BoilerBraces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boiler-braces-of the type having spreading feet at one end for connection with the boiler-head and with a flat and flared opposite end for attachment to the boiler-shell and the object of the invention is to provide a brace that is convenient to manufacture from a light and thin metal but ultimately of greater strength without taking into its composition any more metal than heretofore used in such devices.
The invention consists in the provision of a laminated boiler-brace comprising a single piece of met-a1 folded or bent over midlength and slightly canted or flared to form the shell-attaching end and with its opposite ends turned laterally outward in opposite directions and then inward toward each other and then backward along the stem to form the foot or head-attaching end of the device and, also, having a quarter twist made in the doubled thickness of metal intermediate the stem and shank ends of the brace, all of which will be fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying single sheet of drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a fragmentary section of one end of a steamboiler, showing one of my improved braces attached in place therein; Fig. 2, a plan view (tilted slightly downward at the left end) of the brace seen in Fig. 1, but omitting the boiler; and Fig. 3, a transverse section, taken on the dotted-line a, a, of Fig. 1, but on an increased scale and omitting the boiler, and with the device turned at a rightangle to that seen in Fig. 1 but in the reverse position to that seen in Fig. 2.
In these views, 1 indicates the boiler-shell and 2 the boiler-head, both connected together by the usual rivets 3.
My boiler-brace, used, as customary, to properly hold the head in place in the shell, is composed of a stem A, a shank 5, a flatand flared shell-attaching end 6 at the extremity of said shank 5 and a laterally- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 434,034.
spreading foot 7 at the head-attaching end of said stem 4. These parts are all made up of a. single length or piece of metal, doubled over midlength at 6 and with both limbs or members lying contiguous up to the foot end 7, at which latter point said limbs or members are turned laterally from each other, then folded or bent over at 8, 8 and continued inwardly at 9, 9 contiguous to the first lateral extension, and then bent at 10, 10, at right-angles to the inwardly-bent portions 9, 9 into inward extensions 11 that lie flatly in contact with the outer face of said two limbs or members of the stem 4. A twist 12 is made midlength of the brace, between the stem and shank portions thereof, so that the foot end 7 is brought into the proper relation with the narrow or shellattaching end 6 for the customary attachment of the device at an angle within the boiler. The doubling of the metal throughout the length of the brace provides a laminated device of great tensile strength, imparting the desired strength otherwise in the brace where necessary.
The foot-end 7 of the brace is suitably flared in relation to the stem 4, taken edgewise of the latter, to suit the angle at which the brace is to be attached within the boiler, as customary.
6 6 represent rivet holes in the shell attaching end of the brace and 7 7 represent rivet holes in the opposite foot end 7 of the brace, both sets being pierced through a double thickness of material and at the desired angle to suit the position of attach ment by means of rivets 13 in relation to the head and the shell of the boiler.
I claim A boiler-brace having a body portion formed from a single piece of sheet-metal doubled over middle length, and having a partial twist intermediate its ends, a head attaching member having laterally extending feet arranged at right angles to a part of the body portion, the laterally bent portion of the feet then being bent back upon themselves and terminating into inwardly arranged projections, said projections being flush with a part of the body portion for a certain distance of its length.
CHARLES NEBLETT.
