INCANDESGENT-LAMP BASE.
To all whom 'it mag/concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS G. TURNER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at New York city, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Incandescent-Lamp Bases, of which the `following is a clear, full, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide means adapted to render useless incandescent electric lamps when removed from a socket after having been once inserted therein.
The mechanical means for accomplishing this invention may of course be varied to any extent which experience and expediency may require.
In the following specification and in the drawings accompanying the same I have shown certain constructions adapted to secure the result desired.
In essence, my invention consists of a lamp base and lamp adapted to enter any ordinary screw shell socket, as would any standard lamp, but provided with means so that upon the attempt to remove the lamp, the connections between the filament and the terminal to the base will be broken, and destroyed, so as to render the lamp useless.
The scope of my invention will be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents my improved lamp in side elevation with the socket shell in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of the lamp of Fig. 1 on line 2 2 thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the inner member of the base and a portion of the bulb. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional plan on line 4-#4 Fi L 2. brdken away of a modified form of base. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the base of Fig. 5 in place in a socket. Fig. 7 is an en larged section on line 7-7 Fig. 6 and Fig. S is an enlarged detail on line 8-8, Figs. and 7.
As shown in the drawings, 1 is the lamp bulb, 2 is an ordinary filament sealed in the neck of the bulb, 3 and 4 are connecting wires. lhe wire 3 leads from the filament to the end or button terminal 5 of the lamp, the wire 4 leads to the screw shell terminal 6 passing through an insulating disk 7 secured to und forming a part of the inner member The terminals 5 and 6 Specification of Letters Patent.

4shell so as not to be capable of being further rotated or binding on its thread when the lamp is turned clockwise, during its insertion into the socket shell. The outer member 6 is formed with an indented lug 12 whichpis free to slide in a recess 13 of the inner shell. 'In normal position the lug occupies the position shown in Fig'. 4. Upon inserting the lamp and rotating the bulb clockwise the lug 12 will abut against the end of the groove 13, so that all parts will turn as anentirety. On attempting to remove the lamp however, the shell 6 will bind more or less, as it is made a snug fit to hinder its vready removal, andvthe bulb and inner member will be, rotated independently throughout the length of the slot 13 causing the disk 7 to draw taut the wire 4 and break the same, thus placing the lamp out of commission. It will he seen that the kink 9 in the Wire will aid in locating the place of breakage. At the same time a factory equipped to repair lamps, by removing the base, can readily repair the lamp.
i In Figs. 5 to 8, I have shown a modified form of lamp, diering essentially in that I supply a positive means for hindering the removal of the outer shell to insure a breakage of the connecting wire instead of relying on frictional grip alone by the outer shell on the socket. In the modification 14 is the socket shell. The inner shell 15 is formed with a iiared out skirt 16 fitting the socket .shell 14 but of lesser diameter above the skirt 16. On the reduced diameter of the inner shell there is mounted an outer shell 16 carrying a spiral spring 17 of one or more turns, as may be desired. A lug 18 of the inner shell is turned outwardly and-upwardly to slide in a groove 19 in the spring 17. A lug 2O on the outer shell in the normal position of Fig. 7 may act as a stopfor the lug 18. The conduetin r wires 21 and 22 and disks 23 and 24 may be like those of Figs. 1 to 4.

I claim as m invention:
l. An electric bulb, a filament, end and screw shell terminals, connecting wires leading from said terminals to the filament, and means for destroying the connection between one of said terminals and the filament to render said lamp useless, adapted to come into operation upon and by the removal of the lamp from its socket.
2. An electric lamp com rising a bulb, a iilament, end and screw she l terminals, connecting wires leading from said terminals to the filament, and means adapted to break the connecting wires, operable upon and by the removal of the lamp from its socket.
3. An electric lamp comprising a bulb,- a filament, end and screw shell terminals, connecting wires leading from said terminals to the filament, means adapted to break the connecting wires, operable u on and by the removal of the lamp from its socket, and means for hindering the removal of the lamp from its socket.
4. An electric lamp comprising a bulb, a filament, end and screw shell terminals, connecting wires leading from said terminals to the filament, said screw shell comprising two parts immovable with relation to one another during the insertion of thelamp in its socket, means to permit movement of the part secured to the bulb independently of the other shell, upon rotating the lamp, in the direction oi its removal, the connections adapted to be destroyed between the terminals and filament upon such independent motion.
5. An electric lamp comprising a bulb, a filament, end and screw shell terminals, connecting wires leading from said terminals to the filament, said screw shell comprising two parts immovable with relation to one another during the insertion of the lamp in its socket, means to permit movement of the part secured to the bulb independently of the other shell upon rotating the lamp in the direction of its removal, and means for hinderin the removal of the said other shell.

connecting wires leading from said terminals to the lament, said screw shell comprising an inner and an outer member, the inner member secured to the bulb, the outer member adapted to contact with a socket shell, two of the connecting wires assing through the inner member, said members being rotatable with relation to each other and means to prevent their rotation upon the insertion of the lamp into its socket.
7. An electric lamp comprising a bulb, a filament, end and screw shell terminals, connecting wires leading from said ,terminals to the filament, said screw shell comprising an inner and an outer member, the inner member secured to the bulb, the outer member adapted to contact with a socket shell, two of the connecting wires assing through the inner member, said members being rot-atable with relation to each other, means to prevent their rotation upon the insertion of the lamp into its socket, and means for hindering the removal by rotation of the outer shell.
8. An electric lamp comprisinga bulb, a filament, end and screw shell terminals, connecting wires leading from said terminals to the filament, said screw shell comprising an inner and an outer member, the inner member secured to the bulb, the outer member adapted to contact with a socket shell, two of the connecting wires assing through the inner member, said mem ers being rotatable with relation to each other, means to prevent their rotation upon the insertion of the lamp into its socket, said means con sisting cfa recess in the periphery of one shell and a lug carried by the other shell entering the recess.
9. An electric lain comprising a. bulb, a lament therein, en and screw shell terminals, connectin wires leading from the terminals to the lament, one of said terminals being movable with relation to the bulb and hindered from motion by said connecting wire..
10. Any electric lamp comprising a bulb, a filament therein, end and screw shell terminals, connecting `wires leading from the terminals to the lament, one of said lterminals being movable with relation to the bulb and hindered from mot-ion by said connecting wire, and means for increasing the grip on the socketI by the terminal which is movable with relation to the bulb.
11. An electric lamp comprising a bulb, a filament therein, end and screw shell terminals, connecting wires leading from the terminals to the filament, one of said terminals being movable with relation to the bulb and hindered from motion by said connecting wire, a stop limiting the extent of movement of the movable terminal.
