Be it known that I, NATHAN WISE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Multiple Incandescent Electric Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The invent-ion provides an electric lamp,
of the incandescent type embodying a plurality of metal filaments, wherein the filaments are disposed one above the other and V are adapted to be brought successively into circuit from the bottomfilament upward,
thereby preventing short circuiting or impairment of the lower filaments by particles of-an upper filament falling thereon when burned out, broken or otherwise disqualified for further service.
The invent-ion provides novel circuit closing means to admit of any filament being brought into circuit and the latter made secure against any possible opening incident to jar or vibration, the circuit closing means including 'a screw cap and a complemental cooperating screw member, whereby the closing'is made positive and bindingby a screwthread action. The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention. However,it is to be understood that ill adapting the' same to meet different conditionsj'various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without 85 departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.

. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The lamp bulb or globe 1 may be of any usual construction and is formed with a neck 2 which is closed by means of a head or plug. Within the neck 2 is disposed the usualsupporting stem '3 of glass or like material, the end of the neck being closed by a suitable filling 4 of cement or composition. A section 5 is placed upon the fillmg 4 and may be of any insulating material such as vulcanite, papier mach or other suitable material. A metal sleeve 6 is fitted to the lamp head and encompasses the parts 4 and 5 and constitutes one of the lamp terminals in a manner well understood.
A cap 19 is internally screw-uhreadedto' snugly fit the threaded collar of the annular terminal 17 and when in position 0on1v pletely encloses the lamp terminal 16. Thus when the lamp is in service the lower fila- 1 ment 8 only is in circuit, the filament, 7 being held in reserve to be brought into:
service when the filament 8 becomes disqualified for further use from any cause. In this manner the lowermost filamentis first utilizedand when unfitted for further use the filament 7 is brought into active positionby removing the cap 19 so as to expose the terminal 16. It is to be understood that the lamp is of usual construction to be plugged into the ordinary socket which closes the circuit through the'sleeve 6 and the central terminal such as 16 or 19 whichever one is ex posed to make contact with the central contact of the lamp socket. Insulation 20 is disposed within the cap 19 to guard against short circuiting of the terminals 16 and 17 by the cap.
The annular terminal 17 has its base portion provided with a plurality of projections 21 which pass through vertical openings 22 formed in the section 5, the terminal portions of the projections 21 bein bent inwardly to retain the terminal 17 in position and prevent turning thereof when rotating the cap 19 to screw it uponor unscrew it from the collar of the terminal 17. Radial openings 23 are formed in the section 5 and intersect with the vertical openings 22. A. suitable instrument or tool is adapted to be inserted in the openings 23 to-bend or clinch the terminals of the projeetions' 21. The screw cap 19 makes a positive and binding connection with the exteriorly threaded collar of the annular contact 17 and by reason of its function constitutes a displaceable terminal which may be thrown aside or discarded after the lower filament '8 has been burned out or otherwise unfitted for further service.
When the screw cap 19 is in position the lamp is adapted for service in substantially the same manner 1 as the ordinary incandescent lamp and when plugged into a socket and the current turned on, the circuit is through the lower filament 8. When the filament 8 becomes ineffective for further service the filament 7 is brought into active posltion by removing the screw cap 19 which is discarded. The circuit/through the lamp is now by way of the terminals 16 and 6. By having the lowermost filament in service at the outset any particles falling therefrom when the' filament becomes burned out or broken will not light upon and tend to short circuit or otherwise impair the efliciency of any other filament such as would be the case if an upper filament was first brought into service. The screw cap 19 provides simple means for insuring a firm and positive connection and also acts as a protee-tor for the terminal 16 of the reserved filament.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is 1. In an incandescent electric lamp, in-

eluding a plurality of filaments and lamp terminals, an annular member in electric connection with'one of the lamp terminals and comprising a base and a collar, and a cap constituting a lamp terminal and covering one of the other lamp terminals and detachablymounted upon the collar.
3. In an incandescent electric lamp, including a plurality of filaments, and lamp terminals, and having its base or head provided with a centrally disposed projection, an annular member in electric connection with one of. the lamp terminals and disposed on the base and having a collar fitted upon the said projection, and a cap constituting a lamp terminal and covering one of the other lamp terminals and detachably mount ed upon the threaded collar.
' 4. In an incandescent electric lamp, in
eluding a plurality of filaments and lam terminals, and having the outer end of its 1 base or head recessed and provided with a central projection, an annular member in electric connection with one of the lamp terminals and comprising a base portion and a collar, the latter snugly fitting the projection of the lamp head, and a cap consti tuting a lamp terminal and covering one of the other lamp terminals and detachably mounted upon said collar.
In an incandescent electric lamp, in cluding a plurality of filaments and lamp terminals, one of such terminals consisting of an annular contact member encircling another one of the terminals and a cap adapted to be fitted to the annular contact mem her and enclose the terminal encircled thereby.
.6. In an incandescent electric lamp, including aplurality of filaments and lamp terminals, one of such terminals consisting of an annular contact member encircling another one of the terminals and a cap adapted to be fitted to the annular contact member and enclose the terminal encircled thereby, said cap being displaceable'to expose the enclosed terminal to admit of the filament electrically connected therewith being brought into active service.
7. In anincandescent electric lamp, including a plurality of filamentsandlamp terminals and having the lamp base formed at itsouter end with an annular recess and r I with one of the lamp terminals and constituting one of the active contacts and adapted to be detached from the lamp without injury thereto, so as to expose another of the lamp terminals in position to make positive electric contact.
9. In an incandescent electric lamp, including a plurality of filaments and lamp terminals, a tubular attachable and detachable element having electric connection with one of the lamp terminals'and constituting the active contact and a cutout for one of the other lamp terminals and when detached admitting of such terminal being brought into 0 erative position.
10. n an incandescent electric lamp, including two filaments and corresponding lamp terminals, a tubular element in electric connection with one of the lamp terminals and adapted to be attached to and detached therefrom and constituting the active contact and cutting the other terminal out of action and so arranged that when detached the other lamp terminal is brought into active contacting position.
1.1. In an incandescent electric lamp, upper and lower metal filaments of approximately circular form, upper and lower insulator supporting elements, braces connecting the insulatorelements with the respeca tive filaments, a stem connecting the insulator elements, a lead wire forming a support for the said stem and insulator element and electrically connected with one of the filaments, lamp terminals electrically connected with the filaments, one of said terminals being of annular form and having an externally screw-threaded collar which encircles one of the lamp terminals and an internally screw-threaded cap mounted upon the said threaded collar and enclosing the lamp terminal encircled by said collar.
12. An incandescent electric lamp, comprising a plurality of filaments, one common terminal for all of the filaments, and a separate terminal for each of the filaments, a
cap in electrical connection with one of the lamp terminals and forming a. cover for and insulated from one of the other lamp terminals.
13. An incandescent electric lamp having two filaments arranged one above the other, a common terminal for both filaments, a separate terminal for each of the filaments, a cap attachably and detachably fitting over and insulated from one of the terminals and forming electrical connection with the separate terminal of thelower filament, the cap being adapted to be readily detached when the lower filament is rendereduseless so as toexpose the terminal of the upper filament.
14. In an incandescent electric lamp, including a plurality of filaments and lamp terminals, an annular member exteriorly screw-threaded and in electric connection with one of the lamp terminals, and an interiorly screw-threaded cap detachably fitted to said annular member and covering one of the other lamp terminals. 7

In an incandescent electric lamp, including a plurality of filaments and lamp terminals, an annular member in electric connection with one of the lamp terminals and comprising a base and an exteriorly screw-threaded collar, and an interiorly screw-threaded cap constituting a lamp terminal and covering one of the other lamp terminals and detachably mounted upon the screw-threaded collar,
