Description
UNITED STATES MUNI' A. "SClIU'l'i, OF PERU, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO TIIE PERU ELF l',
PATENT OFFICE@ MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FUSE-PLUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,908, dated :December 7', i897.`
'Application tiled April 16, 1897.
To LEZ whom t may concer/L:
Be it known that I, DUNY A. SCHUTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana,
have invented or-discovered a new and useful Improvement in Fuse-Plugs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof this application, in whichf- Figure l represents a portion of a circuitblock equipped with my improved fuse-plug, one of the plugs having been removed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line II II of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a View of the plug in side elevation. Fig. 4 is a top plan view with the cover removed. Fig. 5 is a bottom View.
My device consists of a new and useful improvement in fuse-plugs for use in a single, double, or three wire system of main and branches, an'd is designed to be used as a protection to lamps on overloadedwires. It is constructed in such a manner that it may be :5 removed from the block and replacer". by a lamp, if desired.
Referring to the block A, made of porcelain or other suitable insulating material, the terminals of the circuit consist of a central upwardly-extending threaded post 2 and a surrounding ring y3, each having extensions suitably secured to the base and provided with binding-screws 4.
The fuse-plug consists of a base 5, of porcelain, provided with an upwardly-extending iiange G, within which rests the` cap 7. At its bottom the base 5 is provided with two countersunk contacting segments 8 8', extending out to a common level and designed to bear evenlyl on the ring 3 when the plug is in position, the segment S being retained by a screw 9, leading through the base and securing together the segment and an upper terminal plate 10, provided with a binding f screw 11. The center of the base is cored ont @and a central hollow stud l2 is inserted, enlarged at the bottom and internally screwthreaded to engage the post 2, the upper end passing through a terminal plate 13 and riveted over, thereby making a good electrical connection. The stud is tapped at the top,
Serial No. 632,438. (No model.)
and a screw la, inserted therein, serves tolclil the cap in position. The terminal plato 11.5 is provided with a binding-screw I5, and be tween the two terminals, secured by the screws 1l and l5, is located the fuse 16, thereby establishing a circuit. A suitable groove 17 is made in the top ofthe base to receive the fuse. Air ducts or slots 1S are provided in the lease, and similar holes 19 in the cap, for the pur pose of giving air circulation and to allow gas to escape in case of burning of the fuso. The cap also serves to prevent' the escape of sparks in case of the burning of the fuse.
The edge of the fuse-plug is preferably knurlcd, as at 20, so as to provide a secr means for grasping it in the lingers when. .ci sert'ing.
The advantages of compactness, simpliciLw and utility will commend myimproved fu plug to those familiar with the art, as it applicable to a wide variety of use.
1. A fuso-plug consisting of a base of insu lating material, a center metallic post provided with a fuse connection at the top and internally threaded in its base, a metallic contact in the side of the base with a connecting-- screw extending through to the top and pra vided with a fuse connection, and a fuse attached to such connection, substantially set forth.
2. A fuse-plug consisting of a base of insu lating material, a center metallic post provided with a fuse connection at the top and S internally threaded in its base, a metallic ecn-- tact in the sident the base with a connectingn screw extending through to the top and pio vided with a fuse connection, and a fuse atn taohed to su'ch connection, with a cap of in g sulating material secured upon the top of the base, substantially as set forth.
3. Afuseplug consisting of a base of insulating material, a center metallic post provided with a fuse connection at the top and c5 internally threaded at its base, a metallic ccntact in the side of the base with a connecting screw evtending 'through to the top and pro vided n h a fuse connection, a similar o positely located hearing-plate, a dep annular groove in the top of the base, .l .t located therein and attached to the fuse mmnections, air-vents through the side of the base, and a cap of insulating material secured upon the top of the base by a screw tapped into the center post, and air-vent passages through the cap, substantially as set forth.
e. In combination with the' electric terminals of a circuit-block, a fuse-plug consisting of a base of insulating material, a center metallic post provided with a fuse connection at the top and internally threaded in its base, ai metallic Contact in the side of the base with a connecting-screw extending through to the. top and provided with a fuse connection, and a fuse attached to such connection, with a cap of insulatii g material secured upon the top of the base substantially as set forth.
' 5. In combination with a metallic threaded post forming an electrical terminal and an encircling detached metallic ring forming the other terminal; a fuse-plug consisting of a base of insulating material, a center metallic post provided with a fuse connection at the top and internally threaded in its base, a. metallic contact in the side of the base with a connecting-screw extending through to the top and provided with afuse connection, and a fuse attached to such connection, with a cap of insulating material secured .upon the top lof the base, substantially as set forth.-
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand lthis 27th day of January, 1897.
