INCANDESCENT LAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.'730,768, dated June 9, 1903.
Application filed April 2,1902. Serial No. 101,072. N model-l State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Incandescent Lamps;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In Letters Patent No. 656,1l5,issued to me August 14, 1900, I showed and described an incandescent electric lamp of the class employing a plurality of filaments and means for controlling the current so that it may be cut into either filament or both in series, such lamp as shown being applicable only to the Westinghouse socket. In the use pr application of that invention inconvenience has been experienced in that its employment was restricted to the Westinghouse socket, it being necessary to replace sockets of the other typesThomson-Houston and Edisonwith those of the former.
The object of this present invention is to so construct the base-pieces of both the Thomson-Houston and Edison lamps as to practically amount to a new base for such lamps and render the use of my'lamp applicable to the Thomson-Houston and Edison sockets, so
that the ordinary sockets need not be dis turbed and lamps with or without the improvemen ts contemplated by the before-mentioned patent may be employed without changing or substituting other sockets.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a modified lampbase of the form shown in the before-mentioned patent. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the modified Edison base-piece. Fig. 3 ,is a like view of the base modified for the Thomson- Houston socket. Fig. 4 is a section through the modified Westinghouse base.
As is well known and as pointed out in my before-mentioned patent, the Westinghouse lamp has a central contact-post 1, which fits within a contact-plate 2, which in the present instance is made to form part of the lampbase, being mounted in an insulating-body 4,
located in the base-piece 5. From the basepiece project spring-fingers 6 for engaging an annular ridge 7 of the lamp-bulb, thereby holding the removable base to or on the bulb. These spring-fingers extend from a ring 8, mounted within the base-piece 5 of the Edison or Thomson-Houston or Westinghouse type, which latter, so far as their exterior appearance is concerned, are the same as is ordinarily found on lamps of the constructions stated.
The end contact-piece 9 of the Edison and Westinghouse base-pieces are shown in the form of pins extended inwardlyand threaded so as to engage a Z-shaped connecting-plate 10, to which the insulating-body 4 is secured by a screw 12, which latter not only holds such insulating-body in position, but also holds plate 2 in engagement with the connecting-plate 10.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the Thomson-Houston lamp-base with its central contact 13 electrically connected, as by a spring or wire 14, with the retaining-screw 15, which, as before pointed out, holds the insulating-body in place and forms connection with the central contact-plate 2.
Thus it will be seen that I have equipped the several lamp base-pieces with the modified socket, adapting the several lamp basepieces to my improved lamp, so that the lat ter may be used in connection with any of the sockets in general use.
I claim as my invention -1. The combination with a lamp-bulb, of a base piece removably secured thereto, a socket contact-piece Within such base-piece, acentral contact, and an electrical connection between such contact and the said socket contact-piece, as set forth.
2. The combination with 'a' lamphaving a central contact-post, of a base-piece removably secured on said 'lainphavinga terminal with which said post is designed to contact, a central contact in the end of said base, and an electrical connection between said contact and said terminal, as set forth.
3. The combination with a lamp having a central contact-post, of a base-piece removably secured on said lamp, an insulating- ,body' Within the base-piece, a terminal plate with which said post is designed to contact,
a central contact-pin at the end of said basepiece, said pin being threaded, a c0nnectingplate having a threaded opening for said pin, and a binding-screw connecting said terminal plate to said connecting-plate, and holdin g said insulating-body within the base-piece, as set forth.
