Specification of Application filed September 17, 1909.
State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in railroad ties.
The object of my invention is to provide a metallic guard plate for a tie, so constructed as to prolong the life of the tie, providing a durable means for holding the rails to the ties, and a readily adjustable securing mechanism whereby the rails may be readily removed or secured.
Vvith these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out inane appended claim, it being understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described maybe made, within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.

and downward to form the spur lip 15 having the beveled edge 16, this lip being driven into the tie, to prevent any lengthwise displacement of the same. These terminal spur lips are centrally positioned and perform the functions of spikes as it were, in assisting to hold the base plates to the ties.
Each base plate proximal to its end flange has two spike openings marked 20, all of these spike openings being in alinement, as shown in the top View.
' In connection with each base plate, I employ two securing plates 22, each having an upwardly directed stop flange 23, each tact with the flange 9 o the rail as shown. Each securing plate has two spike openings marked 24 in the drawings arranged for coaction with the spike openings within the base plate, so that. the spikes 25 maybe carried through the openings 20 and 24 and be driven into the ties to firmly hold the securing plates 22 to the base plate, and the base plate in turn to the tie 5.
In the use of the device, it is found necessary' to remove but one of the spikes 25 in case the rail should be removed. In the operation oi? removing a rail, the operator would remove one of the spikes, the remain- -'in'gspike serving as a. pivot. 'lhe securing plate having been carried outward, the rail is removed or secured as the case may be, when the securing plate is again forced into position and secured by means of a spike.
The metallic base plate above described may be formed entire at one operation, being. stamped from sheet metal as stated. So also can the securing plate be formed entire at. one operation. This attachment may be effected in any suitable workmanlike manner and the base plate can of course also be used in connection with concrete or metallie tics, a boltbeing used to secure the plate to the base member.
The device is simple and inexpcnsive'in construction, and both durable and eliicient in operation.
What is claimed is:
