To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN J. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in License-Tag Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to a license tag holder for use in connection with motor vehicles, the present method being to suspend the tag from some convenient part of the machine by the use of straps, which are very objectionable owing to their cutting apart and thus losing the tag, and the loss of time consumed in attaching and detaching the tag from one machine to another, or for the substitution of tags of difi'erent States.

The objects of the invention are to produce a holder that may be permanently secured to a suitable part of the vehicle, such as the axle, lamp bracket, steering rod, or body, and to which the license tag may be detachably secured in a moment without the use of any tools; and which will hold the tag securely and without any danger of rattle or noise.

Another object of the invention is to produce a holder of this class that is adjustable without the use of tools for tags of all sizes, such as are used by difierent States and required by the number of figures thereon.

Still another object is to provide a holder of few parts, simple of construction, and having no parts to obstruct or hide the face of the tag.

With these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views; but it is fully understood that while I have here described my invention as herewith shown, I do not confine myself to the exact design as shown, as slight changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the several parts within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings :-Figure 1, is a front elevation of my device, showing the dotted outline of a ta retained thereon; and also the position of the spring retaining arms when the tag is removed are shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2, is a side view of the same. Fig. 8, shows the same device in use with a smaller tag.

Referring to the drawings :l, indicates a rod which may be supplied with suitable brackets 2, of any desired form for securing to a convenient part of the vehicle.

Slidably mounted upon the rod 1, are a pair of tag retainers, one right handed and the other left handed, and which are formed with the coil 3, which embraces and is capable of being slid upon the rod 1; and the outwardly and upwardly projecting hook 4, for the purpose of engaging the slot 5, in the tag 6. From the coil 3, depends the spring arm 7, which is formed with the coil spring 8, in the body thereof and has the hooked end 9, adapted to engage the side of the tag 6. The tag retainers being adjusted upon the rod to correspond with the slots in the tag, the tag is hung upon the hooks, and the spring arms are forced outward and their hooked ends placed in engagement with the edges of the tag, thu's retaining the tag securely in place, and thus twisting the slides upon the rod which holds them in place from sliding; while the coil 8, bears against the back of the tag and prevents all rattle of the tag.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A tag holder, comprising a rod suitably secured to the vehicle, slides movably mounted upon said rod, means secured to said slides for suspending said tag; tag retaining arms secured to and depending from said slides and adapted to engage the sides of said tag.

2. A license tag holder, comprising a rod secured to the vehicle, suspending hooks slidably mounted upon said rod, and elastic tag gripping arms depending from said hooks and adapted to embrace the tag.

3. A hcense tag holder, comprising a horizontal rod secured to the Vehicle, spring tagholding arms each formed with a slide adjustably mounted upon said rod, and a hooked portion for engaging said tag and a depending spring actuated portion formed with a hooked end for engaging the side of said tag.

4. A tag holder for license-tags, comprising two spring tension arms for gripping the opposite edges of said tag, hooks carried by the upper ends of said arms and adapted to 5 engage the suspending eyes of said tags, and

means for adjustably securing said arms to g the Vehicle.
