To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN R. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Ill1nois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates particularly to means for separating nicotin from tobacco smoke in pipes and or preventing saliva from entering the bore of the pipe-stem and reaching the bowl of the pipe.

The present invention constitutes a modification of the construction shown in my application No. 475,050, of even date herewith.

My primary object is to provide a slmple and elfective construction for accomplishing the purpose above indicated.

The present invention is particularly adapted to pipes provided with curved mouthpieces.

The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a plpe constructed in accordance with my unprovement; Fig. 2, a side elevational view of the mouth-piece and nicotin-collector carried thereby removed from the pipe-stem; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the nicotincollector shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

In the construction illustrated, A represents a pipe-bowl; B, a stem connected with said bowl; G, a mouth-piece having a sahvachamber therein; D, a tubular nipple connecting the mouth-piece and stem; and E, a nicotin-collector contained in the bore of said stem and having a shank extending through said nipple and carrying a salivaseparator located in the chamber of said mouth-piece.

The stem B, in the construction illustrated, comprises a short section 1 formed integrally with the base of the bowl, and a removable section 2 having screw connection with the section 1. The stem is formed with a comparatively large, straight, smooth bore 3 therein which extends to the bowl of the pipe and has communication with the chamber in the bowl of the pipe through the passage 4.

The mouth-piece C is formed with a saliva-chamber 5 in its base portion and is curved lengthwise, as indicated at 6, the chamber 5 having a corresponding curvature and communicating with a smoke-passage 7 in the tip of the mouth-piece. The mouthpiece has a base-portion 8 of reduced ex ternal circumference, said reduced portion being externally threaded and screwed into the adjacent portion of the nipple D.

The nipple D is of general tubular form and has a reduced inner end-portion 9, an external central flange l0, and an outer endportion 11.

The device E preferably comprises a rod 12 equipped with disks 13 provided with minute perforations, or smoke-passages, 1 1; an inner extension 15 carried by said rod, which is of the same diameter as the disks 13 and has its upper portion cut away as indicated at 16 and hollowed out somewhat to form a pan which is located beneath the passage 1 leading from the chamber in the bowl, the inner end of the member 15 being left in disk-form, as indicated at 17 and filling the inner end of the bore of the pipestem inside of or beyond the passage 4, as indicated in Fig. 1; a shank 18 carrying the rod 12 and extending through the nipple D, said shank having a section 19 of the same diameter as the disks 13, and a section 20 of somewhat larger diameter; and a salivaseparator or deflector 21 carried by the upper portion of the outer end of the shank 18 and provided in its upper portion with a smoke-passage 22 which forms a continuation of, but is offset somewhat from, a smokepassage 23 which extends through the upper port-ion of the shank 18. The base-portion of the shank 18 is enlarged, as indicated at 241, thus forming a shoulder 25 adapted to abut against the internal shoulder 26 with which the nipple D is provided. As will be understood, the bore of the nipple D is stepped to conform to the stepped shape of the shank 18. The saliva-separator 21 is curved somewhat, lengthwise, as indicated.

The manner of use will be readily understood. In the operation of smoking, the smoke passes first upon the an or projection 15, then through the per orations 14: of the disks of the nicotin-collector, and then through the passages 23 and 22 into the mouth-piece. When desired, the mouthpiece and nipple connected therewith may be withdrawn from the stem of the pipe, thereby withdrawing the nicotin-collector, in which operation the disks of the nicotincollector scrape the walls of the bore of the stem. The user may then hold the device illustrated in Fig 2 through the medium of the mouth-piece, while at the same time wiping the nicotin-collector. In this opera tion, the curved saliva-deflector 21 and curved mouth-piece prevents the nicotin-collector from rotating with relation to the mouth-piece. The connection between the nipple D and the stem is a slip-joint connection, and the nipple may be removed by a simple withdrawal action. \Vhen desired, the nipple may be unscrewed from the mouth-piece, whereupon the nicotin-collector may be separated from the nipple by slipping the nipple over the disks of the nicotincollector. It is noteworthy, also, that a slipjoint connection is employed between the nipple D and the shank 18 of the nicotincollector, rendering it unnecessary to unscrew the nipple from the shank of the nicotin-collector.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom.

\Vhat I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a stem provided with a straight, smooth bore, a mouth-piece provided with a saliva-chamber, a nipple connecting said mouth-piece and stem, a nicotin-collector in said bore having means contacting directly with the walls of said bore and adapted to scrape the same in a simple withdrawing motion and having, also, a shank extending through said nipple and having slip-joint connection therewith, said shank being shouldered to effect withdrawal of the nicotin-collector when the nipple is removed from the stem.

2. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a stem provided with a straight, smooth bore, a mouth-piece provided with a saliva-chamber, a nipple connecting said mouth-piece and stem, and a nicotin-collector in said bore having perforate disks contacting with the walls of said bore and having a shank extending through said nipple and having slip-joint connection therewith, and a saliva-separator carried by the upper portion of said shank and projecting into said saliva-chamber, said salivaseparator havinga smoke-passage adjacent the upper wall of said saliva-chamber and communicating with the bore of said stem.

3. A pipe comprising a bowl, a stem con nected therewith having a straight smooth bore, a curved mouthpiece provided with a saliva-chamber, a nipple connecting said mouth-piece and stem, and a nicotin-collector located in said bore and having a shank extending through said nipple and having slip-joint connection therewith, and a curved saliva-separator carried by the upper portion of said shank and having in its upper portion a smoke-passage communicating with the bore of said stem.

4:. A pipe comprising a bowl, a stem connected therewith provided with a straight, smooth bore, a mouth-piece, a nipple connecting said mouth-piece and stem, and a device comprising a nicotin-collector located in said bore and provided with a shank extending through said nipple and having slipjoint connection therewith, and a salivaseparat-or carried by the upper portion of said shank, said saliva-separator and said mouth-piece being shaped to prevent rotation of the nicotin-collector with relation to the mouth-piece in the operation of wiping the nicotin-collector.
