FOLDING CANDLESTICK.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WINCHESTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Black Bear, county of Shoshone, and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Candlesticks, of'which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to miners candlesticks and particularly to folding candlesticks of the class mentioned.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved folding candlestick for miners use which shall be simple of construction, strong and durable and easily made without brazing or welding of any of the parts.
A further object of my invention is to provide a folding candlestick as mentioned which may be placed on the market at a low cost with profit.
A further object of my invention is to provide a miners candlestick having the usual spike and hook and of such construction that said spike and hook may be folded flat with the handle or frame in order that the device may be readily carried in the pocket and in which the parts are firmly locked in both open and folded positions to the end that the device shall form a rigid structure when in use and the points safely held against displacement when folded to prevent injury to the person or clothes.
A further object of my invention is to provide a candlestick characterized as above mentioned in which none of the parts are detached to fold or open the device thereby avoiding the danger of losing or mislaying any of the elements of the candlestick.
Other object-s will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists generally in a frame comprising a handle portion and a pair of spring arms or jaws formed integrally therewith, a clamping bolt extending through the ends of the arms a spike pivotally. mounted on said bolt and adapted to swing between said arms or jaws to open or folded position. The spike is provided with lugs or bosses arranged equidistant each direction from the pivot or clamping bolt and the inner faces of the arms or jaws are provided with recesses to receive said bosses. By loosening the clamping bolt the jaws separate sufficiently to release the bosses or lugs from the recesses and permit the point to Specification of Letters Patent.

swing to either open or closed position when the other bosses or lugs will be in position to enter the recesses. By tightening the bolt the spike is securely held against accidental displacement. One side of the frame is provided with a candle holder of any ordinary or preferred construction such as is adapted for use in devices of the character under consideration.
My invention further consists in a candle stick comprising a frame as above menof the extension on the spike being adapted to rest against the extension on the hook to lock the latter in unfolded position.
My invention further consists in a frame as above mentioned, a block pivotally mounted thereon and a hook pivotally mounted on the block, a clamping bolt extending through the arms of the frame the hook being formed with a shoulder adapted to rest against the inner face of the opposite arm from that to which it is secured and the arm or the side of the handle towhich the hook is secured being provided with a recess on its inner face to receive the point of the hook when in folded position, and so proportioned that when the bolt is tightened the point and the shoulder will be tightly clamped between the respective portions of the frame to prevent the point from leaving the recess.
My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which: 1
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a candlestick embodying my invention in its preferred form, and illustrating the same in folded position, Fig. 2' is a perspective view of the device in extended or unfolded position, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device in folded position wit-h the clamping bolts loosened, parts of the device being shown in section, l ig. at is a side elevation of the device in folded position, and Fig. is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 5 Jcc of Fig. 3 and illustrating the parts in the positions they assume when the clamping bolt is tightened.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates the handle of the frame and 2 and 3 the arms or jaws formed thereon and preferably inte rally therewith. The frame vhich con. in the handle 1 and the arms or jaws and 3 is preferably formed of one piece of steel bentinto the form shown and having sufficient spring or resiliency to normally tend to separate the arms. The outer ends of the arms are perforated to receive a clamping bolt l which extends through the same and which is provided upon one end with a thumb nut 5 by means of which the jaws are clamped together or allowed to open. The end of the bolt 4 adjacent the head 6 is squared as at T and the corresponding perforation S in the arm 2 is also square to prevent turning of the bolt in the arms.
Mounted upon the bolt at and adapted to swing freely thereon between the arms is a spike 9. This is adapted to fold into the handle when not in use and is of such length that the point 10 thereof will fit close against the inner face of the end of the handle when folded as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The spike 9 is provided at a distance from the belt at or pivot point with a pair of bosses or lugs 11 extending from the lateral faces thereof and the arms or jaws 3 are provided with corresponding recesses 12 adapted to receive them to lock the spike in folded position. .Vhen the arms are extended as shown in Fig. 3 the bosses or lugs 11 are withdrawn from the recesses and the spike is free to turn on the bolt. However, when the spike is folded into the handle and the bolt tightened the arms clamp on the side of the spike and the lugs enter the re eesses positively locking the spike against movement. The spike 9 is provided with an extension 13 in alinement therewith and of slightly greater length than the distance from the bolt l to the lugs 11; and said extension is provided with lugs 14 similar in all respects to the lugs 11 and adapted to enter the recesses 11 when the spike is in extended position for use and the bolt tightened.
15 indicates a candle holder or socket of any preferred or ordinary construction and which is secured upon the arm 2 as by riveting.
Pivotally mounted on the upper face of the arm 3 is a block 16. This is provided with a shank or pivot pin 17 extending through said arm and by which it is pivotally mounted thereon. The arm is preferably formed with the lateral extension 18 to receive the shank 1'7 and the lower end of said shank is upset as at 19 to prevent re moval of the block but permit rotation of the same.
20 indicates the hook which is pivotally mounted on the block 16, and the shank 21 of the hook is provided with an offset portion 22 by which it is connected to the block 16, the pivot pin 23 extending through the block and the portion 22. This arrangement forms a recess 2st at the end of the shank of the hook and a shoulder 25 which rests snugly against the upper end 26 of the block 16 when the hook is extended preventing the same from swinging forwardly of vertical position. The rear upper edge of the block 16 is rounded as at 27 to permit the hook to swing downwardly to folded position. The shank of the hook is further provided with an oflset extension 28, parallel with the shank 21 and portion 22 and adapted to extend downwardly between the arms 2 and 3 when the hook is raised into extended or operative position, and the extension 13 of the spike is of such length that its end will rest snugly against the extension 28 when the parts are extended, firmly looking the hook in operative position. \Vhen the hook is turned downwardly to folded position it rests upon a portion of the arm 2 and the side of the handle 1 adjacent thereto and the hook is slightly twisted as shown clearly in Fig. 5 in order that the point will extend into the handle at such times and the inner face of the handle 1 on the side with the arm 3 is provided with a recess 29 to receive the point of the hook. See Figs. 3 and 5. The shank of the hook is formed with a diagonal shoulder 30 which extends into the frame and bears against the inner face thereof when the arms are in clamping position thereby preventing the withdrawal of the point of the hook from the recess 29 when the bolt 4t is tightened, and the point by being in the recess prevents the hook from being raised at such time to disengage the shoulder from the frame.
The device above described is of simple construction, strong and durable and may be readily and easily manufactured at low cost. When the parts are extended into operative position they are positively locked forming a rigid structure and when in folded position for carrying in the pocket the hook and the spike are positively locked with their points well guarded to prevent injury to the person or clothing. Further, to fold or unfold the device none of the parts are removed but remain positively connected so that there is no danger of losing or mislaying some of the parts.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a folding candlestick a frame comprising a handle and a pair of arms, in combination with a clamping bolt extending through the ends of said arms, a spike pivotally mounted on said bolt and adapted to fold between said arms, lugs on said spike ata point removed from said bolt, said arms being provided with recesses to receive said lugs, an extension on said spike and lugs on said extension at the same distance from the bolt as the first said lugs and adapted to enter said recesses when the spike is in extended position, and a candleholder on said frame, substantially as described.
2. In a folding candlestick a handle and a pair-of substantially parallel spring arms extending therefrom, in combination with a bolt extending through the outer ends of said arms and a thumb nut on said bolt adapted to draw said arms toward each other, a candleholder on one of said arms, a block pivotally mounted on one of said arms and a hook pivotally mounted on said block and adapted to fold down against said arms and said handle and the point of said hook being twisted to extend into said handle when in folded position, substantially as described.
In a folding candlestick a frame comprising a handle and a pair of substantially parallel spring arms in combination with a oandleholder on said frame, a block pivotally mounted on one of said arms and a hook pivotally mounted on said block and adapted to fold down on said frame, the point being adapted to extend within said handle and the inner face of the handle on one side being provided with a recess to receive said point and a shoulder formed on said hook and adapted to extend between said arms and impinge against the arm 0pposite the side containing said recess and a clamping bolt extending through said arms and adapted to draw the same firmly together against said shoulder to maintain said point in said recess, substantially as described.
4. In a folding candlestick a frame comprising a handle and a pair of arms extending therefrom, in combination with a bolt extending through the ends of said arms, a spike pivotally mounted on said bolt and adapted to fold between said arms and int-o said handle, an extension on said spike adapted to be received between said arms when the spike is in extended position, a block pivotally mounted on said frame, a hook pivotally mounted on said block and adapted to fold down on said frame, an extension on said hook adapted to extend downwardly between said arms when the hook is raised into operative position, the end of the extension on said spike being adapted to engage the extension on the hook to lock said hook in extended position, substantially as described.
