Description

@tutti @Mitra CHARLTON EDEN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
Letters Patent N 96,091, dated October 26,1869.
IMPROVEMENT EN MACHINES FOR. MAKING RPE-MOULDINGS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letter Patent and making part of the ame.
To all 'whom it may concem Be it known that I, CHARLTON EDEN, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, and in the State of Indiana, have invented an Improved Circular Moulding-Machine; and I-do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the-letters and gures of reference marked' thereon. l
The nature of the invention consists in the construction of theinachine hereinafter described, for the purpose of cutting straight an annnlarrope-xnoulding,
said machine to be made of wood, iron, and steel, or any other suitable and convenient materials.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my saiddnveution, I proceed to describe it more fully, as follows:
Figure 1, of the accompanying drawings, is a perspective view of said machine.
M N is a straight moulding, in the position in which it'is cut by the said machine.
M' N is -an annular moulding, in a like position.
R. is the rest, in which said mouldings are held while being cut.
T is the guide.
O, the cutter-shaft.
K K, the bearing in which it runs.
P, a pulley, fordriving, and
Q, the cutter, whose edge is of the segmental circular form represented in section by Q, of Figure 3.
A B C D E F G H I is the frame on which the de vice sets, and is of the form there represented.,
S is a slide, which moves up and down on A B, for the purpose of adjusting the size of the moulding to the position of the cutter.
The cutter reaches the moulding by passing into a notch, represented by Q Q" Q', of Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
To use my said machine, the operator takes a cyl-` indrical piece of wood, either straight or annular, of
convenient size, and'having properly adjusted the machine to it, presses it into the rest R until the cutter` strikes it. It is then turned slowly, and pressed forward until-it reaches the guide T, which, passing into the furrow made by the cutter, will, if the cylindricall piece of wood be turned slowly, by reason of its shape, (a segment of a female screw,) carry the wood so that the cutter will shape the furrow like /the space of a round-threaded screw.
This may be repeated on another and another side, until the moulding isv complete, making as many strands in the rope-moulding as may be desired. The cutter makes the adjacent sides of two adjacent strands each time the wood is run through.
By reason of the form of the frame A B C D E F G H I, one half of a cylindrical ring may be turned round and round in the rest R as conveniently as a straight cylinder.l
The guide T, which is a segment of a female screw, may be either right or left-handed. `\If it be righthanded, the wood is turned to the right, and a righthanded moulding produced. If it be left-handed, the wood is turned to the left, and a left-handed moulding produced. A cutter may be placed ou either end of the shaft O, and the same effect produced.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 1. The combination of the rest It, the guide T, the bearing K K, the shaft O, and the pulley I, whenthe same are combined and used for the purpose of cutting rope-moulding, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination ofthe -rest R and. guide T with the cutter Q, substantially as herein set forth.
3. The combination of the rest R, the slide S, and theguide T, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing specification,
I have hereunto set my hand, this. day of May,
` TOHARLTON EDEN.
