UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH JOHNSON, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
BASKET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baskets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a novel construction of basket, and the invention is particularly adapted for clothes baskets or hampers.
The object of the invention is to provide al basket which shall be of simple construction, but exceedingly stout and durable.
lith this object in view, my invention consists essentially in weaving thin, fiat slivers of wood, spirally in between the Vertical slivers and horizontal strips of willow.
The invention consists also in certain details hereinafter fully described and pointed outin the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specication:-Figure l is an inverted plan view of the cover of the basket constructed in accordance with my invention'and Fig. 2 is a side view, parts being broken away and more clearly showing the manner of arranging the parts.
Referring to the drawings A indicates the bottoni of the basket having the parallel upright thin slivers of wood B, con- Specication of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 8, 1906.
Patented June 7, 1910.
Serial No. 300,150.
nected thereto, said upright slivers being connected to the top ring O at their upper ends. Connected also to the bottom A, are the thin flat slivers D, broader than the slivers B and arranged in parallel order as shown and interlaced with the uprights B, said broader slivers D being carried around spirally as shown.
E indicates the thin strips of willow or osier, wound around horizontally and interlaced with the upright and spiral slivers B and D. The handles F are also twisted into these parts. The cover Gr, comprises the ring H, cross slivers I, convolute slivers K and interlaced strips L.
A basket constructed as herein shown and described will be cheap and simple in construction and yet stout and durable.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a basket formed of vertical and horizontal slivers having spirally arranged slivers interwoven in the vertical and horizontal slivers so as to reinforce said basket.
