Description

A. D. BROWN.
coLLAPsIBLE CRATE 0R RECEPTAGLE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. I9l I9l5 Patented Feb. 15, 1916.
F'jLl.
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
ALvINn. BROWN, or No'EwIcn, NEW .YORK
` coLLArsIBLE cmi-rE oa' REcErTAcLE.
Tolall w-w'wt t 'may concern' Be it known that I, ALVIN' D. BBowN, a c1t1- `zen of the United States, residing 'at Norwich, in the county of Chenango and .State'of NewVV York, have invented certain new and useful vImproyemenlS in Collapsible Crates or Receptacles, of which' the following is `a-specification, reference beinghad to lthe acco'mpanying drawings. This invention relates to collapsible crates or receptacles, and has for its primary object to provide a, device of this characterwholly constructed of wire,-which particularly designed as a coritainer'or bin v for potatoes or other farm p roducts.
It is an additional object ofthe invention to provid'e a collapsible crate or receptacle which i'sextremely strong and durable, may
be easily and quickly collapsed or set up 1n condition for use, andwhencollapsed, will I occupy but small storage space.
. The invention has for afurther general object to produce acrate of the 'above char' acter which is light in weightand may be readily moved from place to place and can also be produced at small manufacturing cost.
With the above and other objects in view,
my invention consists in ,the novel features of construction, combination, Vand arrangement of parts Ato be hereinafter-more fully described, claimed, and illustratedinfthe accompanying drawing, inwhich,
Figure 1 is a perspective view iof my vimproved collapsible crate embodying the preferred form; Fig. 2 is a vertical section;'and
Fig. 3 is a perspective'view s howinggthe crate collapsed.` Referring in. detail to, the drawing, 5 and 6v designate the top and bottom wire frames of my improved crate,l each 4of `which 4is formed from a continuous length of steel wire of the requisite gage, in accordance with the size and capacity of the crate. To the Specicati'on .o Letters Patent.
at right angles r Patented Feb. 15,1916.
Application med February 19, 1915. SerialNlo. 9,409.
.Y To the ends of the topmarginal frame wire 5 ofthe crate, the reticulated end sections 9 are connected by turning the upper endsl ofA the vertlcal wire strands thereon, as indicated at 11, so that said end sections may be swung upon the ends of the-marginal frame fwire 5 and raised or lowered. At the free end of each of the end sections 10 of the crate, an addltional horizontal Wire 11 is woven in the wire fabric, and this additional wireis adaptedto be engaged by the free of the en d sections 10 .of the crate are se- ;cured by meansof the hooks 12, the several parts of the crate being held. in erect position and against collapse.
.'Whenl it is desired to collapse the'crate i or receptacle, the h ooks12 are disengaged from the wires 11y of the endsectionsof the frame and -these end sections are, swung upwardly 'and outwardly. The top marginal vwire 5 is then forced laterally so thatthe sides 8 of the frame willswing downwardly,
one ofsaid sides resting upon the bottom of the frame while the. other side will project laterally, therefromand in` the -same plane with said bottom." -The end sections '1 0 ofthe frame are thensw-ung inwardly over the latter vside section and upon each other, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 'ofthe drawing. The several partsof the crate structure are thus very compactly arranged so that a .large number of the crates can be stored in -a comparatively small space.A The crate may be constructed in-'any desired capacity and thesize or gage of themarginal wires and the wiresof the several cratesections varied accordingly. The crate is also extremely f durable as well as light in weight, and may be'conveniently moved from place to place. Having thus full-y described m'y invention,
.what I desire toclaim and secure by Letters ends vof the hook'members .12 whichare set -up as shown in Fig'. 1, and the lower ends A collapsible crate including top and bottomfrectangular marginal frame wires, wire mesh side sections permanently connected to vthe"-lor'igitudinal portions of said marginal wires,a wire mesh bottom secured upon the bottom marginal wire, wire mesh end -secvtions permanenti connectedto the endsofv the top margina Awirefor swin ing move.-
mentfwith res ect thereto, said slde sections' of the crate beingv 'adapted for'lateral swing'-l ingv movement upon the sides of the'lowe'r.l
marginal wire, and said end 4sections beingv gagement with the free ends of the wire end `sections of the crate to retain the several parts of the crate in erect position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ax my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
