Specificaton of Letters Patent.
Patented June 7, 1910.
Application filed December 8, 1909. Serial No. 531368.
To all whom 'it may concem:
Be it known that I, PAUL KAMM, a citi-.
zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State' of Illnos, have invent'cd certain new anduseful I mprovements in Signs, of which the following is a spccificaton. i
My invention relates to improvements n si ns and has for its object theproduction Q an illuminated sign of improved construction and operation.
The invcntion conssts in the combination and arrangemcnt of parts hereinafter de- The prcferred form of Construction as' llustrated n the drawings comprises a suitable box or casing l having a hinged top 2 provided with a downwardly curved reflector 3 at its outer or opening end. One side of box l is closed by a transparent glass plate 4 behind which is removably mounted a frame E carrying a Wire casing or other foraminated sign member G. A signis prepared on the sign member 6 by painting or otherwise color-ing the same, care eing taken that the interstices or perforations therein shall not be closed by the' paint or other coloring matter. Behind sign member 6 is removably mounted a 'frame 8 carrying a transverse sign plate 9 preferablybf glass. Asign is formed on the plate 9 by blocking the same out thereon with paint or other o aquematter so that the desired sign shall e-re resented by the portions of said glas plate eft transparent.
On the exterior of the casing electric light bulbs 7 are mounted immediately above plate 4 and in 'such position that the reflector 3, when the top 2 s closed, will throw the rays of light thereon upon the foram inated sign member 6. Within the casing l and on the side thereof opposite to the foraminated sign member 6 are arranged anotherset of electric light bulbs 10,. adapted to illuminate the interier of casn 1. Lights 7 and 10 are connected in suitable electric circuits and suitable means (not shown) are pro vided for alternately lighting or flashing said exterior and interier lights as will be readily understand by those skilled inthe art. YVhen lights 7 are lighted the sign matter on member 6 will be rendered visible thereby. When lights 7 are extinguished and lights 10 lighted the sign matter on member 6 will not be visible and that on plate 9 will appear owing to the passage of light therethrough. The light passing through plate 9 must also pass through member 6` and for this reason care should be taken that. the interstices on member 6 are not closed.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have illustrated a modi fied form of Construction in which o posite sides of the casing 1' are provide with sign' members 6 and 9 as above described. In this case eXterior lights 7 are mounted on the opposite sides ofcasing "1 immediately above lates 4 and reflectors 3' and 3" provided or the same. The interier lights 10' are, in this ,instance, placed upon a side of the box 'located between the oppositely disposed sign members 6. Otherwise the construction is exactly the same as in the -case above described and the operation is the same except that both signs will .be Visible in two directions instead of one.
While Ihave shown what I deem to be the preferablerform of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of Construction and arrangement of pa'rts described without departing from -my invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and inodifications ascome within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I' claim as new and desire to secure by Leti ters Patenta is:
An illumnatedsi comprising a casin a foraminated mem er in one'sde of 'sad 105 site to said foramnated member; lights on 7110' the exte-io' of said casig above said fo- In testiiony-whereof I have signed my ramnate member; amuwardly swngiig name to this specificatio' in the presence of top for said casi'g; a re ector on said top two subscribmg witnesses. I
and adapted to cover said exte'ior li hts; PAUL .5 and means for alternately lighting sai e`xwitnesses:
terior and interior lights, substantially as HELEN F. LILLE,
described. J OSHUA R. H. Pom.
