The Schedule :ofen-ed m in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, Enns 'SlMPsoN CHASE, of of `Eau Glaire,.and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sawdust-Burners; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
The nature of my invent-ion consists in the confeeding and scattering sawdust over the fire under a boiler, for the purpose of using the same as fuel.
In order to enable others skilled in the `art to which my invention appertains, to make and -use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction a'nd operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in' which- Figure'l is a perspective viewof a boiler and furnace, with my device attached, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the spouts, through which the sawdust is fed to the fire.
A represents an ordinary steam-boiler, with its dome B and the furnace C.
D vD are the sup erheating-steam pipes, placed within the furnace (l, at the sides and ends of the boiler.
At thefront end of the furnace the'superheatiugpipe D is provided with one or `more elbows, a, having one or more orifices through it, and a plug in the outer end, which latter may,l be removed, when necesinside the pipe to blow sary, to allow any subst-ance out.
The steam'is taken from the domev B, and couducted through the pipe AE to the superheatingpipes l) D inthe fire-place, where the steam, by the action of the iire becomes super-heated to such a degree that when it escapes through the orifices in the elbows or nozzles a a, and comes in contact with the sawdust,
it ,will almost instantaneously dry the same, and at the same time scattering it over the re, in a con dition to be burned as ordinary fuel.
The pipe E is provided with a valve-b, which may be opened and shut at pleasure, and also with an ordinary check-valve, e.
At the front end of the furnace Care 'placed one or more spouts, F, placed each one directly over one of the elbows or nozzles a within the furnaces.
The spouts F are provided with valves d, so arranged that the weight of the sawdust will open the same, but as soon as the sawdust ceases to run, the valves will close automatically.
Across the outer ends of the spouts F F is placed another spout, G, having openings in its bottom, with slides t' to regulate thequantity of sawdust fed to the fire. struction and general arrangement of adevice for .lhe sawdust is conveyed through the spout G into the spoutsll` F by meansof a chain or other suitable means.
The sawdust, as soon as it falls down through the inner ends of the spouts F F, is met by the jets of superheated steam from the nozzles a a,and is instantaneously dried and scattered over the fire.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. The arrangement of the pipe E with valves b and e, for conveying the steam from the dome B to.
the superheating-pipes D D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination with the superheating-pipes 1)4 D, the elbows or nozzles a a, when constructed and used substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The spouts G and F F, provided wit-h valves d d, and s lides z' i, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The combination andarrangement of the boiler A, dome B, furnace C, superheating-pipes D D, couducting-pipes E, with its valvcsub e, and the spouts' F F and G, with their valves d d and slides t i, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
