GUARD FOB. WHIP-LABELS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NIoHoLAs F. ALs'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Inez, in the county of IVarren and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for IVhip-Labels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drznvings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a guard for whip labels, and has for its object to provide a device of that class which may be fitted over that portion of a whip stock upon which a label is usually pasted, in a manner to protect such label from wear or defacement, while being readily removable therefrom to enable the label to be shown.
In the following description of my improved guard, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a View, in elevation, of a whip provided with a guard constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is an enlarged longitudinal section of my improved guard, together with the portion of the whip stock to which it is applied. Fig. III is a view of my guard shown applied to a single whip button. Fig. IV is cross sectional view on the line III-III Fig. II. Fig. V is a cross sectional View on the line IV-IV, Fig. II. Fig. VI is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View of the guard.
Referring more in detail to the parts :-1 designates a whip of any ordinary construction and provided with the usual ornamental buttons 2.
3 designates the body of my guard, which is preferably composed of thin, strong cloth and is provided with elastic portions a, near each end, which are adapted to fit over and hold against the buttons 2, when the guard is applied to a whip. The elastic portions are preferably woven into the cloth body 3 and spread sufliciently to fit over adjoining buttons, or a button ferrule on any ordinary whip and hold the intermediate cloth body Specification of Letters Patent.

over the printed label, which is usually applied to the whip stock between the ornamental buttons.
In the use of my improved guard, the body portion 3 may be fitted over the butt end of the whip stock until the elastic members have passed over the ornamental body buttons, or a body and ferrule button, which latter project from the stock body suiiiciently to stretch the elastic as it passes thereover and hold them from slidin back over the whip stock, when the guard will be held in position over the label, as illustrated.
Vi hile the guard member may be held firmly over the whip label, it may also be readily removed herefrom, when the whip is to be shown, by drawing the guard over the end of the stock or rolling same toward the smaller, lash end of the whip. The guard may also be used for protecting the whip buttons, the elastic portions being arranged at each side of a button and the cloth body over same, as illustrated in Figs. I and II.
A device of this character is especially adaptable for use by whip salesmen, who frequently remove their sample whips from a case in order to exhibit same, or when exhibiting whips in a position where there is a probability that they will be frequently handled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is T he combination with a whip body, having projecting buttons and an intervening portion of less diameter than said buttons, of a guard member of textile material having elastic end portions stretched on said buttons and a closely fitting portion connecting said end portions and covering the portion of the whip body between said buttons, said guard member being readily removable from the whip.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I ICI-IOLAS F. ALSTON.
IVitnesses MYRTLE M. JACKSON, E. A. OAHILL.
