CORD-RETAINER FOR PACKAGES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I MORRIS SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United tates, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cord-Retainer for Packages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

In shipping goods inclosed in packages, there are often thefts committed in transit by persons untying the packages and retylng them, so that the receiver of the package will not suspect that it has been tampered with until he has signed a receipt for the package and relieved the carrier from responsibility. To avoid this, the cords are often sealed at their intersection, so that they cannot be untied and retied without leaving evidence, but it is found that even when such fasteners are used, the cords may be slipped lengthwise of the package, so as to permit the package to be opened Without untying the cord.

The object of my invention is to so construct the package that after the cord is once tied and its ends properly protected by a knot-protector, no one can open the package without either breaking the same, mugilating the cord-protector, or cutting the cor My improved device not only serves to prevent the cord from being slipped along the edge of the package, but it also serves to reinforce the package so that the cord may be drawn very taut without liability of crushing in the edge of the package or box.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of a package provided with my improved cord retainers; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of a portion of the package with one of the cord retainers; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 38,of Fig. 2.

My improved device may be used in connection with packages, boxes or containers of various different sizes or forms, but it is especially designed for use With boxes formed of pasteboard, cardboard or similar material.

a flanged bottom 11, and a flanged top or cover 12, the flanges of the bottom and top inclosing the sides of the body. A plurality of my improved retainers are secured to the top and to the bottom along the edges thereof, the number of the retainers being dependent upon the size of the box and the number of times it is desired to pass the cord around the same. Each retainer is formed of sheet material, preferably, sheet metal, and has a plate portion 13 secured to the flange adjacent the connection between the flange and the top or bottom of the box. This plate has two parallel slits therein, and the portion intermediate said slits is stamped to form a curved band or retainer proper 14:. The length of this band and the extent to which it is forced outwardly from the plane of the plate or base portion 13, is dependent upon the size of the cord which it is desired to use in securing the package. On the package the band is disposed at right angles to the general direction of the cord, and is disposed closely adjacent the edge of. the cord.

For holding the retainer in position and for reinforcing the corners of the package, the plate portion 13 is preferably formed integral with a second plate portion 15 engaging with the outer surface of the top or the bottom of the container or box. The outer ends 17 of both of the plate portions, that is, the ends most remote from the angle or line of intersection 16, may be somewhat narrower than the two plates at said line of intersection, and these narrowed ends may be inserted through slots 18 in the sides and top and bottom of the container, and may then be folded back upon their inner surface. Apertures may then be punctured through both ends of the walls of the container and the plate portions, and suitable eyelets 19 may be employed for permanently securing the parts together. It is of course evident that the specific means illustrated for seour ing the ends of the plate portions to the container, may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

In tying up a package provided with my improved retainers, the cord is wrapped about the package in the ordinary way and tector 20, Which if desired may be constructed substantially as shown in patent to Dessauer and Darauch, No. 891,603.

Having thus described by invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A cord retainer for packages, comprising two plate portions at an angle to each other for engagement with two adjacent surfaces of a package or container, to protect the edge of the latter, each of said plate portions having its outer end inserted through the side of the package or container and folded back upon the inner surface of said side, an eyelet securing said folded ends in 5 position, and means carried by one of said plates for preventing the cord from slipping along the edge of the container.
