To all whom "it may concern.

Be it known that I, HENRY E. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ogden, in the county of Veber and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Hammers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improved piano hammer, and the object thereof is to provide a striking surface which may be adjusted to permit a new surface to be brought into strikin contact whenever one portion of said sur ace shall have become flattened and hard from long use.

Another object of the invention is to provide for the adjustment of the felt to impart the desired tone which is commonly produced by picking to soften and ironing to harden.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a hammer constructed in accordance with this invention, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section thereof.

In the embodiment illustrated, a hammer head 1 is shown connected with the usual rod 2. This head 1 is provided on opposite sides with laterally projecting apertured lugs 3 and 4, preferably formed integral therewith for the reception of adjusting screws 5 and 6 for a purpose to be described, the apertures in the lugs extending longitudinally thereof in parallel planes. The felt striking-surface is preferably made in the form of a strip 7 having metal clips 8 and 9 secured to the opposite ends thereof in any suitable manner, preferably by riveting.

These clips 8 and 9, as shown, are made U-shaped in cross section, and are provided with apertures in the bends thereof to receive the adjusting screws 5 and 6 above referred to, and by means of which the strip 7 is secured to and tightened over the free Specification of Letters Patent.

end of the head, this strip being stretched to give the tone desired.

By loosening one screw and tightening the other, the strip may be shifted to present a new surface so that when one portion thereof becomes hardened or worn, it may be readily adjusted to provide a new surface and hence one hammer in reality is designed to perform the function of no less than three at the cost of one.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A piano hammer comprising a head, a felt strip extending around the free end thereof and means operable in said head and engaging the free ends of said strip to tighten it to the desired tension, and operable to adjust it relatively to said head to vary the striking surface.

2. A piano hammer comprising a head, a felt strip extending around the free end thereof, and adjusting screws operable in said head and engaging the free ends of said strip to tighten it to the desired tension and operable to adjust it relatively to said head to vary its striking surface.

3. A piano hammer comprising a head, a felt strip extending around the free end thereof and having metal clips secured to its opposite ends, apertured lugs extending laterally from said head, and adjusting screws extending through said lugs and engaging the clips at the free ends of the felt strip.
