Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 19, 1909.
Patented May 24, 1910. Serial No. 490,902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED OALLLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menfro, in the county of Perr State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Sashes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to sash construction and more particularly to the class of window sashes with removable panes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a window sash in which the glass may be freely inserted and re moved at will and the said glass be secured in the sash without the use of putty or points.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a window sash in which the glass may be secured in place without the use of points, putty, or tacks and it consists in grooving the inner edges of the sash rails and constructing one of said rails with a slot to permit the ready and easy insertion or removal of the glass at will, and this slot is closed by a strip which is secured to the sash frame in a novel manner.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a window sash which is simple in construction, thoroughly eflicient in function, and inexpensive in the manufacture.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention, which to enable those skilled in the art to practice the invention, will be set forth at length in the following description, while the novelty of the invention will be brought out in the claim succeeding the description.

Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the top meeting rail removed from the sash. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary end elevation.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
In the drawings the numeral 10 nates generally a window sash comprising the bottom rail 11, the side rail 12, and the top cross meeting rail 13, and these side and bottom rails are grooved 011 the inner edges as at 14, to receive a glass pane 15. The top rail 13, contains centrally therein an elongated slot 16, which latter registers with the grooves in the sides and bottom rails to permit the ready and easy insertion and removal of the glass by a person when it is desired to fit the glass into and detach the same from the window sash.
The opposite ends of the side rails 12, are extended to form tenons 17, and the top rail 13, is correspondingly mortised to receive the said tenons when assembling the window sash in the construction thereof.
Disposed in suitable sockets in the lower or bottom face of the rail 13 are nuts 18 arranged at opposite ends thereof and into these nuts are threaded screw fasteners 19, which latter secure to the top rail 13 a closure strip 20, the same being adapted to close the slot 16, in said top rail and this closure strip 20 is seated in a correspondingly shaped recess formed in the upper face of the top rail. The said recess in the upper face of the top rail provides a vertically project-ing flange 21, which latter hides the said closure strip from View when looking toward one side of the window sash and also prevents the cracking or marring of the paint coating upon the wood work of the Window sash when the closure strip 20, is being attached to or detached from the top rail of the said sash.
It will be apparent that the glass 15, can be readily and quickly removed or placed within the window sash and thus secured therein without the necessity or use of putty, points, or tacks and in this manner the finish to the appearance of the window mains unaffected or disturbed.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly apparent or understood and therefore a more extended explanation is deemed unnecessary and has been omitted.
What is claimed is The combination with a window sash having side rails, of spaced tenons formed desigsash receiving sockets in its under face between the mortises and closed by the ends of said side rails, nuts held within said sockets, a strip seated upon the top rail and closing the slot therein, and fasteners passed through the strip and top rail and engaging the nuts. 10
