COMBINED DOOR CHECK AND BUFFER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Law L. HAMILTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Albion, county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Door Checks and Bufiers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combined door checks and buffers.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved combined door check and buffer which is very effective, is easily adjusted to serve either as a check or a buffer, is simple and economical in structure and at the same time is strong and durable.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The structure described constitutes one effective embodiment of my invention. Other embodiments would be readily devised by those skilled in the art.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure constituting an effective and preferred embodiment of the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a structure embodying the features of my invention, a door to which the same is attached being shown in detail vertical section. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section of my improved combined door check and buffer taken on a line corresponding to line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section taken on a line corresponding to line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a detail horizontal section taken on a line corresponding to line ll of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a door and 2 a floor, the same being illustrated to show the operative relation of my improved combined door check and buffer when in use. The body or support 3 is preferably plate-like in form and adapted to receive the attaching screws 4. The support 3 is provided with a pair of outwardly projecting ears 5 by which the pivot 6 is carried, the pivot being arranged to extend between the ears. One of the ears is extended at 7 and provided with an inwardly and downwardly turned flange at its upper edge forming a catch 8, the object of which will appear later. The edge of this flange is preferably inclined inwardly as clearly appears in Fig. 4. The engaging member 9 is adjustably mounted on the pivot 6 and provided with a finger piece 10. This engaging member is preferably curved forwardly at its outer end and provided with a shoe or covering 11 of rubber or other suitable material. The engaging member 9 and the finger piece 10 are preferably formed integrally of wire, the wire being bent into a loop as illustrated, the arms of the loop being coiled to form the pivot engaging portion pivotally supporting the same. One of the arms is extended into the finger piece 10 which is preferably provided with a ring 13 at its outer end. This finger piece is adapted to be engaged under the catch 8 for holding the engaging member in its floor engaging position. The engaging member 9 and the finger piece are both preferably formed of spring material and this is effectively accomplished by forming them integrally of spring wire as stated. The engaging member is returned to its ele vated or buffer position by means of the spring let which is provided with arms 15 and 16, the spring being arranged upon the pivot 6 between the arms of the engaging member, the arm 16 being arranged in engagement with the finger piece. This spring automatically returns the engaging member to its elevated or buffer position as soon as the finger piece is disengaged from the catch. This spring ll, may be omitted and the structure still be capable of quite satisfactory operation as the finger piece, when the parts are in their elevated .position, bears against the edge of the finger piece catch so that the engaging member is held in its ele vated position. The spring, however, automatically returns the engaging member to its elevated position and is for that reason an advantage.
My improved catch is very simple and economical in structure and it is possible to form the support of sheet metal stamping and the other parts of wire. By curving the outer end of the engaging member forwardly it more effectively engages the floor and also forms a spring buffer for the door, that is, the engaging member by curving the ends upwardly is adapted to spring or yield when the same acts as a buffer.
My improved combined door check and buffer can be easily adjusted either as a check or as a buffer. When made in the form and of the materials stated it is capable of withstanding very great shocks without injury thereto and may be made very light and at the same time is strong and durable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combined door check and buffer, comprising a support having a pair of outwardly projecting ears, one of said ears having a downwardly facing catch thereon; a pivot carried by said ears; an engaging member adjustably arranged on said pivot and having a finger piece adapted to be engaged with said catch for holding said engaging member in its floor-engaging posi tion, said engaging member and fingerpiece being formed integrally of a piece of wire bent into a loop, the arms of the loop being coiled about said pivot, one arm being extended into said finger piece; and a coiled spring having an arm at each end arranged on said pivot between the arms of said engaging member with one arm in engagement with said finger piece and the other with said support.
2. A combined door check and buffer, comprising a support having a pair of out wardly projecting ears, one of said ears having a downwardly facing catch thereon; a pivot carried by said ears; and an engaging member adjustably arranged on said pivot and having a finger piece adapted to be engaged with said catch for holding said engaging member in its floor engaging position, said engaging member and finger piece being formed integrally of a piece of wire bent into a loop, the arms ofthe loop being coiled about said pivot, one arm being extended into said finger piece.

A combined door check and bufler, comprising a support having a catch thereon; a pivot carried by said support; an engaging member adjustably arranged on said pivot and having a finger piece adapted to be engaged with said catch for holding said engaging member in its floor engaging position; and a spring for supporting said en gaging member in its elevated position.
4. A combined door check and bufler, comprising a support having a catch thereon; a pivot carried by said support; and an engaging member curved forwardly at its outer end, adjustably arranged on said pivot and having a spring finger piece adapted to be engaged with said catch for holding said engaging member in its floor engaging position.
5. A combined door check and buffer, comprising a support having a pair of out wardly projecting ears, one of said ears having an inwardly turned flange at its upper edge, the edge of said flange being inclined rearwardly; a pivot carried by said ears; and an engaging member adjustably arranged on said pivot and having a finger piece arranged to bear against the edge of said flange and adapted to be engaged beneath the same for holding said member in its floor engaging position.
6. A combined door check and buffer, comprising a support having a pair of outwardly projecting ears, one of said ears having an inwardly turned flange at its upper edge; a pivot carried by said ears; and an engaging member adjustably arranged on said pivot and having a finger piece arranged to bear against the edge of said flange and adapted to be engaged beneath the same for holding said member in its floor engaging position. v
