HORSE-POWER LOADER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 16, 1909.

Be it known that we, JOHN P. LUCAS and J osurrr A. LUCAS, citizens of the United States, residing at Browerville, in the county of Todd, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Power Loaders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to loaders and has special reference to a loader adapted to be used for loading material into a cart.
One object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
Another object of the-invention is to provide an improved arrangement of the upper or dumping end of a loader of this character.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of an elevator incline of peculiar construction, a loading fork, and a bail therefor.
The invention further consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a loader constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation thereof; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The numeral 10 indicates the elevator incline and this incline is provided with side rails 11 which project above the face of the incline. These side rails are extended above the incline proper and have their upper ends connected by a cross rail 12 whereon is mounted a housing 13 for a pulley 14. Between the upper end of the elevator incline and the cross rail 12 the side rails are provided with ledges 15, these ledges being so arranged that their upper surfaces are in the plane of the upper surface of the incline 10. The incline 10 projects beyond the lower end of the side rail and said side rail has hinged thereto a pair of supplementary side rails 16 which serve to support a supplementary incline 17. This supplementary incline is for the purpose of resting on the ground when the machine is in use but may be folded upout of the way when the device is being drawn from one place to another. The lower end of the incline is supported on an axle 18 upon which are mounted wheels 19. Cross braces 20 and 21 extend across the under side of the incline and rails 22 are attached to said cross braces and the axle 18, these rails being braced to the side rails 11 by means of struts23.
A bolster 24 is attached to the upper end. of the plane just described by means of struts 25, said struts being further connected to the frame by means of braces 26. The bolster 24 is further provided with the usual king bolt aperture 27 and supported below this bolster is front axle 28 provided with the usual wagon tongue 29, a king bolt being used to connect the axle with the bolster. Upon the axle 28 are mounted wheels 32.
The loading fork proper comprises a bail provided with side members 33 and an end member 34. This bail is of sufiicient width to fit snugly between the side rails 11. The lower end of the bail is perforated as indicated at 36 and through the perforations passes a bar 37 having reduced journal ends 38. The bail is so arranged that these journal ends project over the side rails 11. On the bar 37 is mounted a series of fork teeth 39 and said bar is further provided with a pair of handles 40.
In using the device the material to be loaded is picked up on the fork and the latter drawn to the top of the incline by means of a cable 41 which passes over the pulley at the head of the incline. When the fork has been drawn entirely to the top of the incline the bail will rest on the ledges 15 and the fork member will rotate therein to dump the contents through the opening formed between the side rails 11, top of the incline and cross rails 12. When the fork is again lowered it returns to its normal position.
In order to hold the invention fixed to the ground there has been provided a pair of collars 42 supported on the axle 18, each of which has a laterally extending ear 43 arranged to lie adjacent the ground. Stake pins 44 are provided to extend through these ears and stake the lower end of the incline firmly to the ground, being connected to the device by means of chains 45.
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the character described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a loader, an elevator incline, side rails projecting above the face of the incline and extending above the upper end of said incline, ledges on the inner sides of the upper ends of the side rails having their upper faces in the plane of the upper face of the incline, a cross rail extending across the u per end of the side rails, a pulley r0- tatabl y mounted on said cross rail, in combination with a loading fork, a bail pivoted thereto and adapted to fit between said side rails and rest on the ledges when elevated, said fork being adapted to drop between the ledges when elevated, and a cable attached to said bail and passing over said pulley.
2. In a loader, an elevator incline, side rails projecting above the face of the incline and extending above the upper end of said incline, ledges on the inner sides of the upper ends of the side rails and having their upper faces in the plane of the upper face of the incline, a cross rail extending across the upper ends of the side rails, a pulley rotatably mounted on said cross rail; in combination with a loading fork, a bail pivoted thereto comprising a pair of parallel side bars and a cross bar, said bail being of such dimensions that the side bars will fit between the side rails of the incline to guide the fork and will rest on the ledges when elevated to permit the fork dropping between the ledges, and a cable attached to said bail and passing over said pulley.
