LEWIS N. CASH, OF NEAR EDDYVILLE, KENTUCKY.
WAGON-FRAME FOR MOVING TOBACCO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,039, dated July 14, 1885.
Application filed February 12, 1885. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS N. CASH, a citizen of the United States, residing near the town of Eddyville, in the county of Lyon and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Bemoving Tobacco; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices for removing tobacco and it consists in the peculiar construction and adaptation of devices, as will be hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap, light, and durable frame to be used in connection with a set of supporting-wheels for removing tobacco from the iield or plantation t0 the barn or store-room, and one which will not bruise the same while loading or unloading, the frame being so constructed as to dispense with the necessity of employing more than one person in the operation of loading.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a representation of a perspective View.
Referring by letter to the said drawing, A indicates the main frame, consisting, esscntially, of the lateral longitudinal beams a. a and the front and rear upright frames, B B. In the illustration these upright frames B are composed of four vertical posts, b, which are connected together at their lower ends and braced by bars C, the lateral ones of which are provided with transverse recesses d, tov
receive and engage the axles or bolstcrs, as shown, whereby the same may serve in connecting the front and rear wheels. The longitudinal beams a are rigidly secured to the upright frames B by connecting with the vertical posts thereof. The forward ends of these longitudinal beams c are securely braced from their upper ends with the lower portion of the front upright frame, B, by means of crossbraces e and transverse upper and lower braces, f, while the opposite portions of the said beams are detachably braced by means of the cross-rods D. These rods are connected with the rails a by means of eyebolts g, and their hook ends engage eyes h, secured to the lower portion of the rear upright frame, B. The object of this construction is to adapt the frame so as to afford no obstruction to the tobacco in loading it. It will be seen that by disconnecting the hook ends of the brace-rods when the tobacco is cut and placed upon the usual supportingstick the sticks may be loaded on the frame from between the front and rear wheels and slid down to the stop-pins E at the rear ends of the beams a, in which direction the said beams may have a slight inclination, as shown. Thus it will be perceived that the entire frame may be opened, so as to afford no obstruction in loading, and as the beams a are slightly inclined in the direction of the stopepins the tobacco-sticks will not tend to move forward on the frame during transportation. Another important advantage of this construction is to facilitate turning, as by dispensing with the reach usually employed a very narrow or short turn may be made, as the front wheels I nay pass entirely beneath the longitudinal rails of the frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The frame for removing tobacco, consist ing of the longitudinal lateral rails, the front and rear upright frames supporting the said rails, and the detachable brace-rods connecting the rear portions of the said longitudinal rails with the lower portion of the supporting upright frame, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the front and rear vertical frames, B B, adapted to engage the front and rear axles, the longitudinal rails c a, having an inclination or taper on their upper sides, as shown, and the stops E, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
LEWIS N. CASH.
