ZE. BUTT, OF LINCOLNTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
ARRANGEMENT OF SELF-DUMPING- TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,383, dated October 13, 1857.
To all wlw-m t may concern:
Be it known that I, ZE. BUTT, of the town of Lincolntown, in the county of Lincoln and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Machine which I call an improved Horse-Run and Self-Dumping truck.
This invention is intended to be used in combination with the railway or inclined plane for moving earth, &c., a short distance, and can be substituted for the common wheelbarrow, in forming the earth bed for roads, and in loading cars, carts, &c., greatly abridging the manual labor, by substituting animal power for that of man. And I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side view oi' the double inclined plane, showing the trucks at work thereon, throwing up the earth bed for a road, together with the ropes, pulleys, &c. Fig. 2 shows the railway or inclined plane, trucks, Sac., as used for loading carts, &c.

To enable others skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Fig. 1, double inclined plane, hinged at top or otherwise connected, so as to be readily adjusted, so that the length of the span can be easily shortened or lengthened, to suit the place or kind of work intended. A, braces bolted to the sides of the double inclined plane, to strengthen or support it. these braces have a series of holes at one or each end, so as readily to be adapted to the length of the span. At the top of the inclined plane is a pulley or pulleys, for the purpose of receiving the cord or cords, attached to the trucks. (See F ig. 4f.) C, is a pulley attached to the outside of the shaft which supports the pulley, e, e; m, endless rope or chain which passes over the pulleys C, C, C. m is a ring on endless rope or chain for the purpose of attaching the horse, which, walking backward and forward alternately, raises and lowers the trucks; B, B, wheels of truck, which run upon the frame or railway; E bail or loop to which the cord is fastened which operates the trucks, and which in the left hand truck has a latch or catch (g) attached thereto, which supports the front end of the truck, and is here shown dumping its load. f is an adjustable loop or rod, for the purpose of opening the catch or latch, and thus dropping the front of the truck at any required point. The right hand truck has a small wheel or roller on the bottom thereof (la) which runs upon the adjustable rail F, and when it reaches the end of the rail, the front of the truck drops and discharges its load.
F ig. 2 shows the plane or railway with pulleys, chains, trucks, &C., as used for loading carts, &c., from a bank.
The trucks can be loaded by shovels or Scrapers, and are raised, and lowered alternately, by the horse walking backward and forward, and made to discharge their load at any given point, by the proper adjustment of the device, or devices used for dropping the front end of the truck, which then passing between the rails discharges its load and then by its own gravity returns to the place of loading.
I claim as my invention- The self dumping trucks, as herein shown and described-also the adjustable double inclined plane with ropes, pulleys, &c., together, forming an improved horse-run.
