SALES-BOOK HOLDER.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NrLs F. GARBO, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sales-Book Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in devices for holding duplicating sales books, and the objects of the invention are to provide improved means for holding a duplicating sales book and at the same time insuring the making of the entries in the proper places upon the sales slips.

Another object of the invention is to provide a record or footings sheet or slip carried by said holder and automatically moved each time a sales slip is removed from the book in the holder so as to present a new space for entry of the amount of the next sale, whereby the amounts of all of the sales only will be entered in regular order upon said record or footings sheet.

The invention consists generally in the constructions and combinations hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification; Figure 1 is a plan view of a sales book holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the holder showing a book in position and with the cover closed and the device ready for use. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the holder and book. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the holder with the cover elevated. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 showing the book in position and the record sheet carrier raised. Figs. 7 and 8 are details of the means for operating the record sheet carrier. Fig. 9 is an under side view of a portion of the holder showing the book clamping lever.

In all of the drawings, 2 represents the base of the holder, preferably formed of sheet metal, and presenting a fiat surface 3 for the support of the book 4. This book preferably consists of a number of printed sales slips bound together at one end and perforated near the bound end for the purpose of permitting the ready removal of the slips. At one end the holder is provided with a substantially rectangular open box 5 into which the end of the sales book may be inserted. The plate 3 is preferably slotted within the box 5 and a cam lever 7 is pivoted to the base beneath the slotted portion of said plate. This lever is turned into the position shown in Fig. 5 when the book is to be in-' sorted and it is then turned into the position shown in Fig. 4 whereby the slotted portion of the plate is pressed upward against the book, thereby firmly clamping this book against the plate and the top of the box 5 and thereby securely holding the sales book in position.

I prefer to provide the downwardly pro- 1 jecting side flanges 8 for the base, leaving a space between said flanges substantially equal to the size of the sales book used with the holder and I also prefer to provide a U-shaped clamping spring 9 arranged between said fianges and adapted to bear against the under side of the plate 3 (see Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 9). This provides a convenient means for holding an extra book, either before or after the same has been used. formed of a thin sheet of metal secured to the base, as hereinafter described, and having a series of openings therein, said open ings being separated by the ribs 11. These openings are preferably arranged as shown in Fig. 1, there being a large opening 12 permitting the name of a purchaser to be written on the top sheet of the book in the holder. The opening 13 permits the date of sale to be written upon said upper sheet at the right of the word Date which will preferably be placed upon the space 14 upon the cover, and at the right of the opening 13 is a space 15 upon the cover upon which preferably appear the Words Amounts Dollars and Cents Below these words are openings 16 and 17 which permit the amount in dollars and cents of each sale to be written upon said top sheet of the book and below the opening for the date and opposite the openings 16 and 17 is the opening 18 which permits the item of each sale to be written on said top sheet on a line opposite the amount of the sale. At the lower part of the holder are a series of openings 19 formed in an auxiliary plate or cover 25 (arranged as hereinafter described), above or below which preferably appear the words Dept, Clerk, Amount Ree, Dollars and Cents and these openings permit the salesman to mark upon the top sheet of the book the number of the department, the number of the clerk making the sale, the amount of cash received, and the footing or total of the entries made upon the sheet through the openings 16 and 17.

The cover 10 may be supported upon the base in any preferred manner. I have shown, however, and prefer to employ a parallel motion device consisting of the links or arms 20, four in number, pivoted to the sides of the base and to the lugs or flanges 21 and 22 at each side of the cover. By this means after each sale and entry the cover may be raised from the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 to the position shown in Figs. 5 and 6 and the upper sheet or slip of the book may be removed by the clerk or salesman together with any other slips upon which duplicate entries have been made.

By employing the carbon sheets, a number of duplicate entries may be made upon any desired number of the sheets. These carbon sheets may be secured in any desired manner. I have here shown a wire clamp pivotally secured to the base of the holder and adapted to clamp any desired number of carbon sheets to the end of the holder (see Figs. 2, 4, 5 and 6). lVith the parallel links or arms 20 connecting the cover 10 to the base 2, it will be noted that the cover may be quickly raised in position to expose the top sheet and may be as quickly returned to a position resting upon the top of the book. It will be further noted that the cover rests squarely upon the top of the book, no matter what the thickness of the book may be. The cover is maintained at all times parallel with the base plate of the holder and is thus capable of use with a book of any thickness and will operate the same with any book until it is all used up.

The entries through the openings 13, 16, 17 and 18 are made directly upon the upper sheet or slip of the sales book, but I prefer to employ an independent footings or record sheet upon which the entries through the openings 19 are made, a carbon sheet being provided to duplicate the entries upon the top sheet of the book. This record sheet is preferably provided in the form of a roll of paper 26 arranged in a casing 24: hinged upon the auxiliary plate 25. The auxiliary plate 25, which is provided with the open-.

ings 19, as already described, is provided with lugs or flanges 27, by means of which this plate is pivoted upon the same pivots that are used for pivoting the upper ends of the links 20 at one end of the cover so that this auxiliary plate may, at any time, be turned from the position shown in Figs. 7 and 8 to the position shown in Fig. 6. The small roll 28 is arranged below the auxiliary plate 25 and the ends of this roll form the pivots for the upper ends of the links 20, the cover 10 and the auxiliary plate 25. The roll 28 is preferably provided with a slot extending through it or wit-h other means for having fastened thereto the free end of the paper roll 26 (see Fig. 6) and said roll is provided with a series of ratchet teeth 29. A spring pawl 30 is pivotally supported on one of the arms 20 in position to engage the ratchet teeth on the roll 28 and a spring pawl 31 is arranged upon the cover and adapted to engage said ratchet teeth so asto prevent any backward movement of said roll. It will be seen that with this arrangement each time the cover is raised for the purpose of removing the sheet or slip, upon which entries have been made, the pawl 30 will pass from the position shown in Fig. 7 to that shown in Fig. 8 and when the cover is lowered or restored to its normal or working position, the pawl 30 will move from the position shown in Fig. 8 to that shown in Fig. 7 and in so doing will turn the roll 28 and thereby move the record sheet one step so as to present a fresh surface opposite the openings 19 for the making of the next entries.

The record sheet is preferably carried by the auxiliary hinged plate 25 for the pur pose of permitting said sheet to be readily inserted or removed at any time. A short carbon sheet 33 is secured to the cover in position to come under the openings 19 when the auxiliary plate is in position for use (see Fig. 6) and the cover is preferably provided with a catch plate 34, which holds the auxiliary plate in position.

I prefer to provide means whereby when the auxiliary plate 25 is raised into the position shown in Fig. 6, both of the pawls 30 and 31 will be disengaged from the ratchet wheel on the roller 28. For this purpose I provide a curved flange 35 that. is formed upon, or secured to, the under side of said plate 25. This flange projects into the plane of the ratchet teeth 29 (see Figs. 7 and 8) and when the auxiliary plate 25 is turned on its pivots from the position shown in Figs. 7 and 8 to that shown in Fig. 6 this flange engages both of the pawls 30 and 31 and moves them away from the ratchet teeth on the roller 28, thereby permitting said roller to be rotated freely for the purpose of re moving the record sheet that has been wound thereon or for connecting a new sheet with said roller.

Operation: In using this device a sales book, having the leaves perforated near the top so as to permit of ready removal, is placed on the base plate of the holder and is clamped to said holder by means of the cam lever 7. The carbon sheets secured to the holder by the clamp 23 are placed between the first and second, and generally between the second and third, sheets of the book. More than two carbons may be used if preferred, in which case the third carbon will be placed between the third and fourth sheets. The clerk or salesman enters upon the topmost sheet of the book the appropriate entries to show each sale of goods. The entries mustbe made through the openings in the cover, as already described. He then makes entries through the openings 19 indicating the department in which the sale is made, the number of the clerk by whom it is made, the total amount of cash received from the purchaser and the amount of the sale in dollars and cents. These entries are made directly upon the footings or record sheet and the carbon impression thereof is made on the top sheet of the book and other similar impressions upon those sheets below that are covered by the carbon paper. Having made the proper entries the clerk raises the cover and throws it back as far as the links will permit it to go and then removes the carbon sheets from between the leaves of the book and then tears off the sheets having impressions thereon. dotted lines in Fig. 6.) One of these may be given to the purchaser and the others sent to the office or any other suitable disposition thereof may be made. Each time that the clerk enters a sale upon the sales book he makes appropriate entries through the openings 19. These entries are made directly upon the record or footings sheet and impressions thereof are made upon the top sheet of the sales book and upon such other sheets as are supplied with the carbon sheet coverings. Each time that the cover is raised and lowered for the purpose of permitting the removal of the sheets that have been marked upon, the record sheet is turned one step bringing a fresh surface thereof opposite the openings 19. The record sheet will, at the close of the day, have a record showing the exact amount of money received by the clerk or salesman using this particular book and holder and also have a record (cilf the totals of all sales made during the The details of the structure may be varied in many important particulars without departing from my invention, hence I do not limit myself to the details of construction shown and described herein.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination, in asales book holder, with a suitable base, of a cover having openings through which entries may be made upon the exposed sheet of a book in said holder, and a parallel motion connection between said cover and said base.

2. The combination, in asales book holder, with a suitable base, and means for securing a sales book thereon, of a cover having openings through which entries may be made (See.

upon the exposed sheet of said book, and a connectin mechanism between said cover and said diase which permits said cover to rest upon the top of said book, parallel with the base, regardless of the thickness of the book.

3. The combination, in a sales book holder,

with a suitable base, and means for securinga sales book thereon, of a cover having openings through which entries may be made upon the exposed sheet of said book, a connecting mechanism between said cover and porting a record sheet.

4:. The combination, in a sales book holder, with a suitable base, and means for securing a sales book thereon, of a cover having openings through which entries may be made upon the exposed sheet of said book, a connecting mechanism between said cover and said base, and an auxiliary plate pivotally supported on said cover, a record sheet, and means on said auxiliary plate for supporting said record sheet.

5. The combination, in a sales book holder, with a suitable base, of a cover supported thereon and having openings through which entries may be made upon the exposed sheet of said book, an auxiliary plate pivotally supported upon said cover, and provided with a series of openings, a record sheet, and means on said auxiliary plate for supporting said record sheet beneath said openings, whereby entries may be made on said record sheet through the openings in the auxiliary plate.

6. The combination, in a sales book holder, with a suitable base, of a cover supported thereon and having openings through which entries may be made upon the exposed sheet of said book, a parallel motion connection between said cover and said base, and means for holding carbon sheets in connection with said book.

7. The combination, with the base, the cover and means connecting said cover and base, of the auxiliary plate pivotally supported upon said cover, the roller having its axis coincident with the pivots of said plate, and means for giving said roller a partial rotation each time the cover is opened and closed.

8. The combination, with the base, the cover, and means connecting said cover and base, of means connected with said cover for supporting a record sheet, and means for moving said record sheet each time said cover is opened and closed.

9. The combination, with the base, the cover, and means connecting said cover and base, of the record sheet, the auxiliary plate, supporting said sheet and provided with the series of openings 19, the roller to which said record sheet is connected, and means for 10. 12. The combination, in a sales book holder, with a suitable base, of a cover having openings through which entries may be made upon the exposed sheet of a sales book in said holder, and a connection between said cover and said base said connection allowing said cover to move outwardly from. said base in parallel relation therewith.
