To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, NILs F. Galino, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Sales Book Holders, of which the following is a specification. Y

My invention relates to devices for holding duplicating sales books and the primary obj ect of the invention is to provide an mproved holder and one which will insure the making of the entries in the proper places upon the sales slips.

Another object of the invention is to provide means adapted for use as a footings or total sheet, automatically moved each time a sales slip is removed from the book.

A further object is to provide improved means for supporting the holder cover.

The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a sales book holder embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, Fig. 3 is a sectional view, illustrating the footing slip and the ratchet mechanism for operating the same, Fig. 4 is an end view, Fig. 5 is a view showing the cover raised, Fig. 6 illustrates the holder in its open position, with the original sales slip partially torn out, Figs. 7 and 8 are details of the mechanism for operating the footing sheet.

In all of the drawings, 2 represents the base of the holder, preferably formed of sheet metal and presenting a fiat surface for the support of the book 3. This book preferably consists of a number of printed sales slips bound together at one end and perforated near the bound end for ready removal of the slips. The holder at one end is pro2 vided with a fixed jaw 4 and a movable jaw 5 hinged at 6 and held in engagement with the bound edges of the slips by springs 7. By this means the book is securely clamped in the holder, but maybe readily removed or a new one inserted by lift-ing the jaw 5. The cover is preferably supported upon the base by means of arms 17, which have upwardly turned ends pivotally connected at 18 to the cover, the opposite ends of the arms being pivoted to lugs 19 and held out of contact with the base by a spring 20. This spring is capable of yielding to allow the cover to accommodate itself to the surface of the book and to the varying thickness thereof. The base 2 is preferably provided with a flanged end 21 which projects into the path of the cover and forms a stop therefor, limiting the outward movement of the arms 17 against the tension of the spring 20. This manner of supporting the cover allows it to be raised from the book and the upper sheet or slip torn off by the clerk or salesman, together with the duplicate slips upon which entries may have been made.

10, 11, 12 and 13 are made directly upon the upper sheet or slip of the sales book, but I prefer to employ an independent footing or record sheet upon which the entries through the openings 16 are made, a carbon sheet being providedto duplicate the entries upon the top sheet of the book. This record sheet is preferably provided in the form of a roll of paper 22, mounted on a spindle 23 which ts `within a casing 24 on the cover and has a linger piece 25 at one end and has its opposite end projecting through a key hole slot 26 in the head of the casing and provided with a pin 27 that is adapted to register with said slot and allow the` withdrawal of the spindle 'from the casing or be rotated and moved out of register with said slot to bear on the head of the casing and lock the spindle therein.

A spring 27 holds the pin 27 against the head of the casing with a yielding pressure. A carbon strip is provided to bear on the paper beneath the opening 16 and is held in place by a spring 28. A spool 29 is mounted on a spindle 30 which has bearings in the sides of the cover and is provided with a longitudinal slot 31 into which the end of the paper roll is inserted, so that when the roll is revolved, the paper will be wound thereon.

I prefer to provide a mechanism which will actuate the roll each time the cover is opened, and to accomplish this I provide a ratchet 32 mounted on the spindle 29 and engaged by a spring catch 33 secured at one end to the cover and having its opposite end arranged to bear on the ratchet wheel. This catch engages a tooth of the ratchet when the cover is opened to revolve the spool 29 one step and move the record sheet a corresponding distance. At the other end of the spool 29 is a ratchet 34 and a catch 35 is mounted von one of the arms 17 in position to engage a tooth of the ratchet 34 and prevent backward movement of the spool when the cover is closed. When the record sheet has been wound on the spool 29, a bail 36, pivoted on the spindle 30, is actuated by the fingers and forced down into the position indicated. in Fig. 8, where it will press the vided with an inwardly turned lug 37, which engages the underside of the catch 35 and disengages it from the ratchet 34, whereupon the spool may be revolved to unwind and remove the record sheet.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination, in a sales -bookvholder with a suitable base, of a cover having openings through which entries may be made upon the exposed sheet of a sales book in said holder, and spring pressed arms pivotally connected to one end of said cover and having pivotal connections with said base on the underside thereof, said arms allowing said cover to adjust itself in parallel relation with said base and accommodating books of different thickness.

2. The combination, in a salesbookholder with a suitable base, of a cover having openings through which entries may be made upon the exposed sheet of a sales book in said holder, arms pivotally connected at one end to the underside of said base and having upwardly bent portions pivotally connected with said cover, and means yieldingly resisting downward movement of said arms.

3. The combination, in a sales bookholder with a suitable base, of a cover having openings through which entries may be made upon the exposed sheet of a sales book in said holder, said base having lugs punched therefrom, spring pressed arms pivoted on said lugs, the ends of said arms projecting beyond the end of said base and pivotally connected with said cover.

4. The combination, in a sales book holder with a suitable base, of a cover having open-- ings through which entries may be made upon the exposed sheet of a sales book in said holder, arms mounted on said base and whereon said cover is pivoted, and said base having a depending liange in the path of said cover, for the purpose specified.

5. A sales book holder comprising a base, a clamp provided at one end of said base wherein the bound end of a sales book is gripped and held, a cover having a pivotal connection at the opposite end of said base and provided with a series of openings through which entries may be made upon the exposed sheet of the sales book, the pivotal connection of said cover with said base allowing said cover to maintain a substan- 7 tially parallel position with respect to said base, regardless of the thickness of the book, substantially as described.

6. A sales book holder comprising a base, a cover pivotally connected therewith and provided with openings through which entries may be made upon the sheet beneath, a spindle and spool mounted in bearings in said cover and whereon a record sheet is Wound, said cover having openings through which entries may be made upon said record sheet and means for actuating said spool when said cover is opened to shift said record sheet.

7. A sales book holder comprising a base, a cover pivoted thereon, a recordsheet carried by said cover, a spool whereon said record sheet is wound, a ratchet wheel connected with said spool, a catch mounted on said cover and engaging said ratchet wheel, whereby said spool and record sheet will be moved one step when the cover is opened, and said cover having openings therein through which said record sheet is exposed.

8. A sales book holder comprising a base, a cover pivoted thereon, a record sheet carried by said cover and means :tor feeding said sheet step by step when said cover is opened, said means including a spool whereon the record sheet is wound, ratchet wheels connected therewith and catches for said ratchet wheels, one catch engaging its wheel to move said spool when said cover is opened, and the other catch engaging its wheel to prevent backward movement of said spool when the cover is closed.

9. A sales book holder comprising a base,

having means for securing a duplicate sales book thereon, a cover pivoted on said base and having openings through which entries may be made upon the top sheet of said book, means mounted in bearings in said cover and whereon a record sheet is wound, said cover having openings through which said record sheet is exposed, means whereby said record sheet will be moved step by step when said cover is opened, and means for locking said sheet against backward movement when the cover is closed.

10. A sales book holder comprising a base, a cover mounted thereon, record-sheet-holding means having bearings in said cover, said holding means including a spool and ratchets and -pawls therefore, one of said pawls actuating its ratchet to move said spool and sheet when said cover is opened, and the other pawl locking its ratchet to prevent backward movement of said spool when the cover is closed, and means for tripping said pawls to release said spool and permit the unwinding of said sheet.

11. A sales book holder comprising a base,

a cover pivotally connected therewith, av

spindle mounted in said cover and having a finger piece at one end and a pin at its opposite end adapted to enter a key-hole slot and when rotated locking said spindle in said cover, a record sheet adapted to be wound on said spindle, a spool to which one end of said record sheet is attached, means connected with said spool and adapted to be operated by the opening of the cover to revolve said spool and wind said sheet thereon, and said cover having openings through which said sheet is exposed, for the purpose specilied.

12. A manifolding sales book holder comprising'a base, a cover mounted thereon, a

-record sheet carried by said cover, means for operating said record sheet when the cover is opened, said cover being capable of move-4 ment away from said base but remaining in substantially parallel relation therewith to adapt the device for sales books of different thickness, and said cover having suitable openings through which a sheet ot the sales book is visible, substantially as described.

13. A sales bookholder comprising a base, a cover pivotally connected therewith, a spindle mounted in said cover, a record sheet adapted to be wound on said spindle, a spool to which one end of said record sheet is attached, and means whereby movement of said cover will operate said spool, for the purpose specified.
